Former plus-size model Merry Wynter needs a life change. Still grief stricken after the death of her beloved husband, Miguel, and losing her job after being accused of theft, life has been very difficult in New York City. When an uncle she never met dies and leaves her his upstate New York castle, Merry figures this was a chance for her to finally make the change.

Things don’t exactly start out the way she thought they would. First, thanks to her GPS, she gets lost. When she finally gets to the castle, it’s not exactly what she expected and will cost her much money to renovate, if she plans to sell it. That’s exactly what she intends to do.

The small town of Autumn Vale is not very inviting. Obviously they are suffering from a bad economy, but the townspeople aren’t exactly friendly. Several try to scare Merry off, the local baker even accuses Merry’s late uncle of murdering her father. Merry gets into a public argument and is stunned when he winds up dead on her property. Naturally the local sheriff labels her as the prime suspect.

With the help of a couple of her New York City friends, Merry does her own investigating. Along the way she’s conned into baking dozens of muffins for the local senior citizens, taking care of her late uncle’s cat, and gets herself wrapped up in the local’s various secrets.

It all blends together for a wonderful introduction to this brand new series, A Merry Muffin Mystery. The characters are quirky and fun to read. Even the secondary characters are strong. The setting is perfect for a cozy mystery. I always love upstate New York.

The storyline moves at a fast pace with many twists and turns along the way. It looks as if there is a bit of a mystery that will continue into future books. There are even some yummy looking muffin recipes included, too. I’m looking forward to getting to know Merry and her friends even better in future books. Great start to what looks to be a fun series.
