Review: Agatha Raisin and the Quiche of Death by M.C. Beaton (Agatha Raisin #1)

Genre:
Cozy Mystery

Format:
Audio

Publisher:
Blackstone Audio, Inc.

Release Date:
December 2012

Agatha Raisin is ready to retire to a small English village. She’s had enough of London and her public relations business. She sells her company and off she goes.

Agatha’s first step is to make a name for herself in the town by winning a quiche baking contest. However, Agatha doesn’t bake so she buys herself a ready made quiche and enters it as her own. To her shock and horror, one of the judges dies after taking a bite of it. The police discover it was laced with poison. This was not the name she intended to make for herself – she’s no murderer. The judge’s wife loudly points her finger in Agatha’s direction as the killer.

It’s up to Agatha to clear her name, but her investigation leads her right into the hands of danger. She begins to re-think her decision to leave London. She never had this kind of excitement in the big city and she’s in no mood for it now.

I’ve heard so much about this series that when I saw my library had it, I decided listening to it on audio was the best way to go for me. Sometimes it’s difficult to listen to mysteries on audio, but this is lighthearted and the narrator is really good. I enjoyed this very much.

Agatha will take some time for me to warm up to, though. She’s a cantankerous woman set in her ways. I didn’t find her very lovable, but I think I saw a few cracks in her hard shell. Some of the things she blurted out had me LOL.

I can already see it will be fun to listen to this series. It’s a light, fast-paced mystery. It kind of reminded me of Agatha Christie’s mysteries. I’m definitely ready for the next one.

  1. I've found I have trouble listening to mysteries on audio too. I've seen this series around but haven't heard much about it. I may see if my library has this one.

  2. I haven't had good luck listening to mysteries either but I can see how Agatha Raisin would work. I enjoy her books though Agatha can drive me crazy sometimes! I'm don't like Beaton's other series as much (Hamish MacBeth) but luckily there's enough Agatha Raisins to keep me busy!

  6. This has gotten to be a long series, but I've stuck with it! Some of the early ones are so classically Agatha!

  8. I tried to read one of the Agatha Raisin mysteries way back when, and I was put off by that cantakerousness you mention. I'm glad you found it worth sticking to, though!
