This week I'm joining in Book Beginnings on Friday. It's hosted by Rose City Reader. This is where we post the beginning of the books we are reading or will be reading.

I'm also joining in for the Friday 56.
Freda at Freda's Voice started and hosted The Friday 56 for a long, long time. She is taking a break and Anne at My Head if Full of Books has taken on hosting duties in her absence. Please visit Anne's blog and link to your Friday 56 post.

This week I'm reading a book from one of my favorite cat cozy mystery series.
Book Beginnings...
I checked my watch, then glanced at the clock on my computer. They both told me that it was seven minutes after on p.m. I resisted the urge to get up and pace around the archive office. Instead I turned my chair and looked at the large feline dozing on the wide windowsill behind my desk.
From 56% on my e-reader...
Could he really be as dim-witted as he sounded this morning?
Synopsis from Goodreads:
In Athena, Mississippi, librarian Charlie Harris is known for his good nature—and for his Maine coon cat Diesel that he walks on a leash. Charlie returned to his hometown to immerse himself in books, but taking the plunge into a recent acquisition will have him in over his head…
Lucinda Beckwith Long, the mayor of Athena, has donated a set of Civil War-era diaries to the archives of Athena College. The books were recently discovered among the personal effects of an ancestor of Mrs. Long's husband. The mayor would like Charlie to preserve and to substantiate them as a part of the Long family legacy—something that could benefit her son, Beck, as he prepares to campaign for the state senate.
Beck's biggest rival is Jasper Singletary. His Southern roots are as deep as Beck's, and their families have been bitter enemies since the Civil War. Jasper claims the Long clan has a history of underhanded behavior at the expense of the Singletarys. He'd like to get a look at the diaries in an attempt to expose the Long family's past sins. Meanwhile, a history professor at the college is also determined to get her hands on the books in a last-ditch bid for tenure. But their interest suddenly turns deadly…
Now Charlie is left with a catalog of questions. The diaries seem worth killing for, and one thing is certain: Charlie will need to be careful, because the more he reads, the closer he could be coming to his final chapter…
What do you think? What are you sharing today?
Sounds like a good one!
ReplyDeleteIt really is. I'm loving it.
DeleteI noticed a pattern with children's fiction containing animals: there are mostly dogs. It seems like adult fiction containing animals features mostly cats. I wonder if that's true.
ReplyDeleteLately, in the cozy mystery genre, I've been noticing an increase of dogs in the books. I'll read them, too, but cats are my favorite :)
DeleteI have never known a cat to walk on a leash. I wonder if it is very common. Does the cat help solve the mystery?
ReplyDeleteIt's not a common thing, but some do walk cats. I haven't actually seen them, just heard about it. I wanted to try walking my girls, but I think they'd be too scared out of the house. The cat in this book doesn't have special powers or anything like that. He's a companion for the librarian sleuth. He sort of gives moral support :)
DeleteThat looks good.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like a great story.
ReplyDeleteThe book sounds interesting, but you just made me think of a neighbor who used to walk his cats...he eventually became a hoarder as he aged and had too many cats to walk.

I haven't read this one but am hoping to go back to read the earlier books in the series because I do really enjoy the more recent books. The teasers sound good!
