Synopsis from Goodreads:

When Krissy Hancock and her best friend Vicki decide to open a bookstore café in their new town of Pine Hills, they decide to call it "Death by Coffee," after Krissy’s father’s most famous mystery novel. Little do they know how well the name fits…

On their very first day of business, Brendon Lawyer huffily takes his coffee…to the grave. It seems he had a severe allergy to peanuts…but how could there have been nuts in his coffee? And who stole his emergency allergy medication?

Fortunately, Krissy’s love of puzzles and mysteries leads her not only to Officer Paul Dalton, but also to many of her new neighbors, who aren’t terribly upset that the book is closed on Brendon. But one of them is a killer, and Krissy needs to read between the lies if she wants to save her new store—and live to see how this story ends…

My Review

Krissy Hancock moves to the small town of Pine Hills where she opens a bookstore café with her friend, Vicki. They name their café after Krissy’s father’s most popular novel, “Death by Coffee”. Their business starts off slow and gets even worse when a nasty customer, Brendon Lawyer, dies on opening day after drinking the coffee. It turns out Brendon had an allergy to peanuts, but Krissy insists there were no peanuts in his coffee. Not to mention that it is quite odd that the man didn’t have his Epipen with him.

People deliberately stay away from “Death by Coffee”. After all, who wants to take a chance drinking deadly coffee? Krissy fears her new venture will close before they even get started.

She takes a page out of her father’s mystery books and investigates on her own. She is determined to prove that her shop had nothing to do with the death and that the man had been murdered. It doesn’t take long for her to discover that Brendon had many enemies and very few people are shedding tears at his death.

Krissy gets under everyone’s skin with her investigating techniques. Even the hot police detective, Paul Dalton, is getting annoyed but there might be a few romantic sparks flying as well. Krissy doesn’t give up on her investigation or on the handsome Paul.

The story takes many twists and turns. I was surprised at how it all wrapped up and I didn’t see it coming at all. I loved the small town atmosphere which is perfect for cozy mysteries. The town is filled with unique characters – a little zany and some just outright odd, but they all mix well together to give readers an intriguing caper.

I have to admit, though, I did wish Krissy had toned down her investigation. She blatantly went around town asking personal questions and accusing people of murder and other indiscretions. It’s not the way to make friends in a new town, plus – usually these small towns don’t take kindly to newbies asking so many questions.

However, Krissy has spunk and she doesn’t back down, which is great for a heroine. Readers can’t help cheer her on, even when you wanted to shake some sense into her.

I enjoyed this book and look forward to the next one.
