Synopsis from Goodreads:

From the #1 bestselling authors Hillary Clinton and Louise Penny comes a novel of unsurpassed thrills and incomparable insider expertise—State of Terror.

State of Terror follows a novice Secretary of State who has joined the administration of her rival, a president inaugurated after four years of American leadership that shrank from the world stage. A series of terrorist attacks throws the global order into disarray, and the secretary is tasked with assembling a team to unravel the deadly conspiracy, a scheme carefully designed to take advantage of an American government dangerously out of touch and out of power in the places where it counts the most.

This high-stakes thriller of international intrigue features behind-the-scenes global drama informed by details only an insider could know.

My Review

The new Secretary of State, Ellen Adams, is faced with a terrifying crisis.  There have been terrorist attacks throughout the world and they have received a few threats that are a bit closer to home.  It’s a race around the clock to stop the violence and bring the country together.

This is a hard one to summarize so I will just leave it at that as well as Goodreads’ description above.  State of Terror really resonated with me - it felt, unfortunately, as if something like this could actually happen today.  It’s quite a scary thought.  I wasn’t sure I’d even want to attempt to read it as it's not my usual genre, but I gave it a shot and I’m glad I did.

The characters are well portrayed.  I could feel Clinton’s first hand knowledge of being a Secretary of State shine through these pages.  Ellen Adams truly does come to life.  I felt all her emotions as she tried desperately to save lives.

Every chapter gave you a different twist.  When you think you know what’s going on, you quickly learn that you don’t.  The authors do a great job of surprising the reader and catching us off guard.  At least that’s how I felt and I love being caught off guard.  As I approached the end of the book, I just couldn’t put it down.  I had to know who was behind all of this.

I’m wondering if we’ll be getting a sequel.  I’d be here for one.  This one is already on my list of contenders for best book of 2022.
