Synopsis from Goodreads:

Sometimes a life change...

Can toss you into deep water.

Nail salon owner, Lorelei Baker, is more than ready for a change after her divorce. So, when her cousin, Carolina Hart – heroine of the Hart Times Cozy Mysteries series – tells her about a job possibility, she jumps at the chance.

Becoming a kitchen manager on a river cruise boat wasn’t something she’d ever dreamed she’d do, but it couldn’t be much more dramatic than running a nail salon…could it?

Lorelei dives right into the position and gets along with everyone onboard, with one exception. There’s a busybody activities director, who thinks she runs the entire ship, and refuses to see it any other way.

When the busybody goes overboard, the staff doesn’t know if it was accidental or intentional. Unfortunately, knowing the contentious nature of the woman’s relationship with Lorelei, all eyes turn toward the new kid in town.

Feeling like she’s in over her head, Lorelei becomes the next target. Left with no other choice, and fearing for her life, she uses her finely tuned problem-solving skills to try to catch the killer.

Can she crack the case and keep her new job? Find out in this exciting new Culinary Cozy Mystery!

My Review

Lorelei Baker is trying to get back on her feet after her husband cheated on her and they went through a divorce.  She applies for a job as a kitchen manager on a river cruise boat.  Although she has no experience, she’s excited to give it a try.

Things get off to a difficult start when the activities director appears to take an instant dislike to Lorelei.  She takes every opportunity to give Lorelei a hard time.  When the activities director’s body goes overboard, the police don’t know if it’s an accident or murder.  All eyes turn towards Lorelei since they had a few public disagreements.

Lorelei worries about her new job, as well as her freedom.  So, she does some investigating on her own.  She finds the victim was not a well-liked member of the crew at all.

The characters are well written, especially Lorelei.  She’s strong and an excellent amateur sleuth.  I, also, like her supporting cast of characters.  They are fun and add humor to the story.  I was surprised at how it ended and who the culprit turned out to be, but it all made sense.

This is a quick cozy mystery.  I love the cruising setting and this one fit the bill.  Dead in the Water is the first book in the series, and I can see this is going to be hours of fun.  I’m looking forward to visiting Lorelei and her friends soon.  I'm going to even check out this author's other cozy mystery series.
