Book through Thursday - Half Read Books

This week's question...

So … you’re halfway through a book and you’re hating it. It’s boring. It’s trite. It’s badly written. But … you’ve invested all this time to reading the first half.

What do you do? Read the second half? Just to finish out the story? Find out what happens?

Or, cut your losses and dump the second half?

My answer...

First, I rarely ever stop reading a book once I've started. If I get to about 50 pages and don't like it, I'll put it back in my TBR and start something new. Often, I'll go back to that partially read book months later and like it better.

However, if I'm already halfway through a book, I'll keep reading. Although, I might skim some sections. I've done that, especially if an author goes overboard on the narrative or descriptions.

The only time I'll stop completely and give up is if the book came from the library - then there's no cost to me. If I spent good money on it, then I'll finish or save it to try another time.

  1. Sounds like a good system. I agree that sometimes it's the season, not the book; I might try again later and like it better.

Love that picture! That's what I do with cookies, too. :-)

  2. I am the same, my own, yes I give those a chance or skim, but library books, not so much

  3. I usually skim to the end and move on to the next book.

  5. I agree on going back to a book, I consider that to be mood reading.

Bad books I give up on.
