Synopsis from Goodreads:

Boston Homicide Detective, Christie Watson, wants nothing less than to bury her head in the sand in her hometown, Sleepy Creek, Ohio. Placed on sabbatical for a little ‘over-enthusiasm,’ Chris has to stay out of trouble or risk losing her job for good, and Sleepy Creek, with its clapboard homes and peaceful milieu, seems just the place to do that. But returning to Sleepy Creek means facing the one cold case she’s never solved: her mother’s murder.

The past becomes the least of her worries, however, when a man is murdered in her best friend’s back yard. Griselda, awesome human being all-round and owner of the local Burger Bar – serving scrumptious delights like the Mexican Fiesta Burger – is the prime suspect. To make matters worse, the handsome detective in charge of the case won’t quit asking questions or drop the icy professionalism whenever Chris counters with her own.

Det. Watson can’t let this one slide – sabbatical or not, she won’t let her friend wind up behind bars for a crime she didn’t commit. Equipped with her cop skills, and that thirst for truth, she sets off to solve the murder before it’s too late.

My Review

After being forced to take a break from her job in Boston, Detective Christie Watson heads to her hometown of Sleepy Creek, Ohio.  In order for her to return to her job, she must be on her best behavior and stay out of any criminal investigations.  Her best friend, Grizzy, offers her a place to stay and even gives her a temporary job in the burger bar she owns.

The problem in returning to her hometown, it reminds her of her mother’s unsolved murder.  Then, a man is murdered in Grizzy’s yard and the cops turn their eyes directly on Grizzy as the prime suspect.  Even though she’s not supposed to get involved, Christie is ready to risk her career to save her best friend, not to mention doing a little snooping into her mother’s death.

This is the first book in the Burger Bar cozy mystery series and I think it got off to an excellent start.  I was hooked right from the beginning.  Even though this is a short story (140 pages), there is quite a bit of depth in this storyline.

The characters are well-rounded.  I liked Christie and her friends immediately.  Christie is a strong sleuth.  I’m not going to say amateur sleuth since she is a detective.  I loved her determination and strength.

The main mystery is wrapped up in this story, but there is a secondary mystery that continues to the next book.  So, I do suggest starting with this book.  I’m really looking forward to reading more of this series.  I can’t believe I’ve had this one on my Kindle for so long.  I do have to warn readers…this book will make you very hungry.
