Synopsis from Goodreads:

From New England's Storyteller, Steven Manchester, comes the nostalgia-filled sequel to Bread Bags & Bullies; a novel about growing up in a whacky family during the 1980s. Boom boxes, leg warmers and Rubik’s Cubes—it’s all there. A hysterical walk down memory lane!

My Review

This story is about a family growing up in the 1980’s.  It mainly focuses on their summer vacation in 1984.  It features a family of three teenage boys trying to find their own place in the world as they drive their parents crazy. They learn the meaning of family and caring about each other.

The middle son, Herbie, does the narrating.  As an adult, he is grieving the loss of his father, but he remembers the good times.  He takes us back to the adventures he and his brothers had during the summer of 1984.  The memories bring laughter and a few tears, too.

Although this is a sequel to Bread Bags & Bullies, I think it can be read on its own.  However, you should really read both and soak up the nostalgia.  It brought back so many memories for me and has me thinking about my own family during that time.

Steven Manchester has been a favorite author of mine for years.  He outdoes himself with this one.  His writing brings his words to life.  It’s a touching and memorable book.  It is a story to savor and think about even after the book ends.

  1. I haven't heard of this author or the first book but this sounds delightful. I love the titles and I love an author who can really bring a story to life. Definitely adding this to my TBR.

  2. I like these memoir style fictional reads. This one seems like a good one and being a child in the 80's myself, I think I'll be able to relate quite a bit as well.
