Review: Ma Tutt’s Donut Hut by Lyndon Perry

About the Book

Cozy Mystery, Paranormal

Tule Fog Press

Release Date
July 1, 2014

Synopsis from Goodreads:

A Curious Cozy with a Magical Cat!

Dolly Tutt has just opened her own bakery in the small mountain community of Sugar Pine Station. But the Creamy Pie franchise across the street is giving her fits. Her business is dying. She needs a miracle or she'll be forced to close.

Fortunately, Mack, a mysterious tabby that came with the doughnut shop, lends a paw by pointing Dolly to a magical ingredient that definitely puts the spice back in her life and rejuvenates the Donut Hut. Unfortunately, it also unleashes as series of catastrophes that may end up destroying her business once and for all.

This short novel of about 100 pages is a complete adventure but contains four tales within the larger gentle mystery. Think of it in terms of a four episode mini-series with each story complete unto itself but all add up to a satisfying conclusion. At least that’s the goal! Thanks for reading!

My Review

This is a hard one to summarize so I’ll just let Goodreads’ synopsis above do that.  This is a short mystery with a few paranormal overtones and an adorable cat named Mack.

The story is filled with quirky characters. I really liked Dolly and how she fights to save her new business. The mystery surrounds Dotty’s new donut shop.  She even lets Mack guide her way regardless of all the obstacles thrown their way.

It’s told in four stories within the one main story.  It’s an interesting technique.  I can’t remember seeing this done before, but it worked well with this book.

I stumbled upon this one with my Kindle Unlimited subscription and I’m glad I did.  I don’t see that there are anymore books with these characters, but this made for a pleasant reading experience for a few hours. Very charming book.

Disclosure:  I borrowed this one from the Kindle Unlimited library . All opinions expressed are my own.

  1. I do like the idea of looking at it as a 4 part mini series and I guess it can fall under Hallmark Mysteries as well!

    Sounds good Yvonne!

  2. A magical cat mystery. Haven't seen one of those tropes in a while. Enjoy!

  3. I'm intrigued by the four stories told in one - especially since it worked. I'll have to give this book a try.

  4. That looks really good and I love the cover.

  5. It's been 8 years since I wrote this book and I didn't realize you'd read and reviewed it this summer. Thank you so much! My son-in-law designed the cover. A friend designed book #2's cover and matched the theme really well I think. Let me know if you are interested in reading Secret Spice!
