Monday Musings

Today's Question...

When reading do you read every word? Do you ever skip chapters or skim over parts? (question curtesy of Wendy)

My Answer...I have to admit, there are times when I do skim. I don't skip whole chapters, but sometimes if there's too much narration or description, I'll skim through. Also, if it's a boring book and I just want to get to the end, I'll skim. I know I should probably stop reading a book if I find it that boring, but for some reason, I just can't. Probably has something to do with spending the money for a book, so I figure I should read the entire thing even if it's awful. In any case, back to the question...yep, I do skim. It's not often that I do that, but it does happen.

Only the Cat Knows by Marian Babson

Genre: Cozy Mysteries

Vance loves his twin sister Vanessa more than anyone in this world. So, when he learns someone tried to kill her and she now lies in a coma, he is furious beyond words. He vows he will bring the culprit to justice. Vance decides to impersonate his twin, claiming amnesia as a result of the accident.

He has no idea of the strange world his beloved sister has been living in. She lives amongst young women who appear to harbor some serious feelings of jealousy towards each other and her in particular. There is also Gloriana, Vanessa’s beautiful Angora cat. Vance has his hands full convincing everyone he is the real Vanessa, but cats can be smarter than humans as Vance slowly begins to find out.

When some of the young women begin to disappear, Vance realizes he must work harder and faster at finding out who is behind his sister’s “accident”. He’s sure all the events are tied together. He prays his sister will hang on, as he also prays no one finds out his true identity.

It’s been a long time since I’ve read a Marian Babson book and I’ve missed them. She writes wonderful cozy mysteries with a wide array of quirky character. This plot takes so many twists and turns, she makes you feel like you are on a roller coaster ride. This was a fun book and I’ll be searching through my TBR for more by this author.

Nights in Rodanthe by Nicholas Sparks

Genre: Romance, Fiction

Adrienne Willis is heartbroken when her husband leaves her for a younger woman. At 45, Adrienne is not ready to start her life all over again and raise their three children alone. She agrees to take care of a friend’s inn in Rodanthe, North Carolina for a long weekend. When a storm moves in and the inn only has one guest – a very single, handsome guest, her life takes an unexpected turn.

Paul Flanner has lost everything. Thanks to being a workaholic, he lost his wife and son. His son is now grown up and living in Ecuador. Paul plans to reconcile with his son, but first he has to make a stop in Rodanthe. One of Paul’s patients died after surgery and now her widower has a few things he wants to tell Paul. Consumed with feelings of guilt, Paul intends to make things right and explain what happened to the man. He never expected to fall head over heels for the beautiful caretaker of the inn.

Paul and Adrienne are drawn together in just one weekend. A weekend that changes their lives forever by a violent storm and their own passion.

This story is very moving. It will bring both tears and a smile to your face as you read about these two lonely people searching for happiness. Nicholas Sparks’ words flow beautifully through each and every page.
