The State of My Reading Challenges

For a few weeks I've been obsessing over the number of reading challenges I joined in 2009 and the amount I wasn't going to complete. It's so easy to join up with reading challenges since they all sound like so much fun. I wasn't going to sign up for any in 2010 and just try to complete the ones I'm already part of that end in 2010.

However...upon second thought, I've decided to take a closer look at the challenges and sign up for some in 2010. The first couple of months of the year I will be recuperating from surgery, but I'm hoping I'll still be able to read...in fact, I'm planning for a lot of reading time. We'll see how that works out.

So far, for 2010 I'm hosting these challenges:

2010 Harlequin/Silhouette Reading Challenge (co-hosting with Gina at Book Dragon)
James Patterson Reading Challenges
Women's Murder Club Reading Challenges
(The last two I started in the summer of 2009, so they are still running into 2010.)

I'm going to browse around upcoming challenges this weekend and see which ones I want to do for 2010.

Here's how I've done in 2009...

Completed Challenges: 13
Not Completed: 7
Still running in 2010: 7

When you see the numbers in print, I guess completing 13 isn't too terrible. Only 7 will end in 2009 and not be completed. Who knows, maybe I'll still complete more before the year is over.

The key for me is to not obsess over not being able to complete them all. My real goal for joining these challenges is (and was last year too!) to focus on reading what I have in my TBR. I'll never make a dent in my TBR, but there are so many books I really want to read that challenges tend to keep me focused. I have to remember, this is supposed to be a fun thing, not a stressful one. We all have enough stress in our lives.

  1. I have abandoned all challenges until the end of the year, I found it all too stressful. Yet I am still joining more for next year. I just can't resist.

  2. You did great. I may have completed 23 but I abandoned or didn't complete 25!

  3. I've got about 3 or 4 that I have not completed, but just may carry them over next year.

  4. Vivienne - It sounds like you and I are alot of like. I pretty much abandoned the ones I didn't finish, too.

Book Dragon - Wow, 25 - sounds like you were joining alot too. It's so easy to do!

Nise - I'm thinking of carrying some over too.

  5. You've done a great job, especially considering how many challenges you joined this year.

I'm taking a hiatus from most challenges this next year. I'm still going to be a part of two that are continuing. It's going to be so hard to resist joining new ones as so many sound like ones I'd enjoy. I'm trying to be strong though!

  7. Reading challenges are wonderful, but they can put pressure on us to read a certain type of book and/or a certain number of books. I think you did quite well with yours, Yvonne.

I'm a newbie to challenges, and have only joined a few this year. Someday I'd like to host a challenge of my own, if I can come up with a unique one and design a button. :)
