A Fistful of Collars by Spencer Quinn

Genre:
Mystery

Format:
EBook (available as hardcover)

Publisher:
Atria Books

Release Date:
September 2012

Bernie Little and his faithful partner Chet are back in a brand new mystery. Did I mention that Chet is a dog?

A movie crew has arrived in the “Valley” and the mayor’s office is quite excited about it. The movie is sure to bring money to their town. To make sure nothing goes wrong, the mayor hires Bernie and Chet to babysit the movie’s heartthrob, Thad Perry. Thad is known to be one of Hollywood’s bad boys and it’s up to the Little Detective Agency to keep him on his best behavior. To add to their assignment, Thad’s cat Brando wants to create a little havoc of his own with Chet.

As Bernie and Chet become more and more involved in Thad’s life, they learn there is an old crime in his past that involved a major cover up. Bernie intends to get to the bottom of it, but when he discovers a murder and drugs are involved, he realizes he might lose more than just his job. He could lose his life, too. Not to mention Chet’s.

Add in Bernie’s rocky romance, his six year old wanting to be a movie star and a pushy ex-wife, you get another exciting Bernie and Chet adventure. It’s a fast-paced mystery that keeps you guessing until the end.

It’s narrated by Chet and his love for Bernie is so evident in each word. Their relationship is so touching. Chet’s one liners keep you laughing and his love for food is also pretty strong through the entire book. LOL It’s hysterical when he starts drifting off in his narration and thinks about food.

This is the fifth book in the series. I listened to the previous four on audio, but this one I downloaded through NetGalley. I adore this series, even if the cat is just a guest star and not a main character. LOL

Desert Intrigue by Linda Weaver Clarke

Genre:
Mystery

Publisher:
Red Mountain Shadows Publishing

Release Date:
March 2012

Format:
EBook (also available in paperback)

Julia Evans’ brother, Kelly, inherits the family property in Arizona and opens a dude ranch. He does quite well with it, but suddenly, things take a turn for the worst and mysterious things happen. The guests believe the ranch is haunted and business takes a huge nosedive. Julia, her husband and their twin daughters take a trip to Arizona to help out, but it’s not as easy as they thought it would be.

The mysterious incidents become downright dangerous, especially when Julia’s life becomes the target. All signs point to someone on Kelly’s ranch being the culprit. A possibility that tears Kelly apart since he trusts the men implicitly, but obviously one of them has betrayed that trust.

A secondary storyline involves April, Julia and John’s daughter. She’s in the midst of planning her wedding and the one person she needs by her side is her mother. However, April understands that Julia needs to be in Arizona for her brother, but that doesn’t stop her from nearly having a nervous breakdown when the wedding plans go up in smoke.

Meanwhile, fear of going broke is leading Kelly to want to get rid of the precious family land. Julia has no intentions of sitting on the sidelines and allowing this to happen. With the help of her family, she intends to catch the person behind these horrible threats.

I loved the first three books in this series, but I actually loved this one even more. I didn’t think that was possible. The characters are so well written and I absolutely adore each member of the Evans family. The love and concern they have for each other is apparent with each page. They grab at your heartstrings and won’t let go. You can’t help but cheer for them.

As for the story, talk about a fast-paced story. Desert Intrigue is that and more! It’s an easy, quick read. I’ve been having a tough time this week and this book certainly lightened my mood. It’s a book that will leave you with that “warm fuzzy” feeling.

This can be read as a standalone book, but I suggest you treat yourself and read them all. Linda Weaver Clarke has outdone herself with this book!

Bookgiveaway/Review/Guest Blog Post: Copycat Killing by Sofie Kelly (A Magical Cat Mystery #3)

Genre:
Cozy Mystery

Publisher:
Obsidian Mystery

Format:
Paperback

Release Date:
May 2012

Mayville Heights is having major rain storms causing a huge flood in the small town’s local artists’ co-op. Librarian Kathleen Paulson is desperately trying to help her friends save their art work from being destroyed by all the water. She’s more than a little stunned when she discovers the body of one of the artists floating in the basement. The questions begin starting with why was he down there in the first place.

Kathleen stumbles upon a few clues that make her think the artist’s death is more than an accidental drowning. She’s devastated when the clues lead to her best friend, but she knows Maggie is innocent of any wrongdoing. Kathleen is determined to clear her friend’s name, as well as discover what really happened to Jaeger Merrill.

Kathleen gets quite a bit of help in her search for the truth starting with her two magical cats, Owen and Hercules. Their mystical powers come in handy in cracking this case, along with the help of the handsome detective, Marcus Gordon.

I absolutely love this series! It’s the third book and I’ve loved each book a little more than the previous one. I’ve come to love and care about all these characters. Kathleen is a strong character and her two best friends, Maggie and Roma, are equally as strong. Not to mention those two cutie pie cats – one disappears whenever he wants and the other walks through walls. The best part is when Kathleen has conversations with her cats. Mine aren’t magical, but I have conversations, too, and I’m sure they understand every word I say 

This is a fast–paced book with a cozy setting, loveable characters and more twists and turns than a rollercoaster. An excellent cozy!

Yep, it gets 5 kitties from me and my Socrates’ Great Book Alert…

Cat’s Can’t Shoot by Clea Simon (A Pru Marlowe Pet Noir, Book #2) (Review and Interview)

Genre:
Cozy Mystery

Format:
EBook (Available in paperback)

Publisher:
Poisoned Pen Press

Release Date:
April 2012

Animal psychic, Pru Marlowe, hears there has been a cat shooting and she’s furious. She can’t stand the idea of animal brutality and she plans to make sure this situation is dealt with and fast. However, when she arrives on the scene, she discovers that the cat is the one who is accused of doing the shooting using an antique gun. Although relieved that no cat has been shot, she’s not buying that the cat is guilty either.

She tries to communicate with the beautiful Persian, but she has no luck. The cat is keeping her info to herself. She’s obviously traumatized since the victim was her beloved human. Pru turns to the neighborhood pets, and her own tabby Wallis, for some assistance. They try to help, but Pru is getting mixed signals from everyone and she discovers that victim had quite a few enemies that she never expected to find.

Pru Marlowe is the new Doctor Doolittle of the literary world. She knows exactly what these animals are thinking and what they need. I just want to stress that this is not a supernatural book. The pets do not talk aloud. Pru has a psychic ability, but it’s not a paranormal book. It’s a cozy mystery.

Pru is a strong character who fights for what she knows to be right. She doesn’t sit back and hope that someone saves the day. She does her own saving, even though her latest boyfriend is a cop. She doesn’t depend on him or anyone else, for that matter. Well, she does depend on her tabby, Wallis. Their scenes make me laugh. They are like an old married couple. Their concern and love for each other comes through each page loud and clear.

The story is fast-paced with a mystery that will lead you in several different directions before we finally get our answers. Any book that features a kitty as the main character (along with a lovely cover shot) gets my vote.

I loved Clea’s Theda Krakow series, but I’m loving this series even more. I can’t wait for book #3 to come out. Of course, it also gets my Socrates’ Great Book Alert.

And now...an interview with the author of the book...Clea Simon

Please join me in welcoming author, Clea Simon, to Socrates’ Book Review Blog.  I’ve had the honor of interviewing her for my blog before and it’s always a pleasure to have her visit with us.

Thank you, Yvonne, for hosting me! I always appreciate the chance to meet readers. After all, I’m one, too!

To begin, what’s new with your writing career?

Wow, you have caught me in a busy time! I am celebrating the release of two new mysteries right now: “Cats Can’t Shoot,” the second Pru Marlowe pet noir, which just received a starred review from Booklist (can you tell I’m thrilled?). And “Grey Expectations,” the fourth Dulcie Schwartz feline mystery. “Grey Expectations” did not get a star, although Publishers Weekly called it “enchanting” and my husband says its his favorite of all my books. At any rate, they’re both very different – Pru is tough and her tabby sidekick is tougher. Dulcie is a bookworm, like me. So that’s a lot to celebrate!

You write a few different series with different characters, do you have a favorite?

Honestly? It’s whoever I am writing at the moment. I just finished drafting the fifth Dulcie book, to be called “True Grey,” and I just love her. She’s smart – but booksmart – and she’s got a good heart. When I finished that, I didn’t want to go back to Pru. Pru’s such a different sort. But now I’m deep into the third Pru, which I think – not sure – will be called “Parrots Prove Deadly,” and I am having such fun with Pru! I guess, when I’m writing Dulcie, I love her sweetness and bookishness and think of Pru as a bit of a hard case. When I’m writing Pru, I love her wit and verve and think of Dulcie as a milksop.

Are your characters (humans or pets) influenced by any real life people (or pets)?

My cats are! Seriously, I think they’re all manifestations of my current kitty, Musetta, at this point – except for Mr Grey, who is the spirit of my own late, great grey longhair, Cyrus the Great. But the human characters at this point have taken on their own lives. I know they are part of me. That’s how I figure out what they’d do in different situations. At this point, though, they feel more like really good friends and I enjoy spending time with them.

Is it difficult writing animal characters vs. human characters?

Not difficult, but different. I never want my animals to become too human. I try to always keep in mind how animals think. In general, what motivates animals is more concrete – food, fear, lust – and they are less imaginative than humans (at least, I think they are). In fact, Wallis looks down on Pru for not seeing the obvious. And Esmé, Dulcie’s kitten, can’t understand why Dulcie doesn’t understand her. With the cats, I kind of go on my own experience, and when I’m writing other animals (dogs, ferrets, and now an African grey parrot), I research them and visit with animals and those who work with them to figure out how they think.

As a child, did you read much?  What types of books did you read?

Yes, like Dulcie I was a total bookworm. I still re-read some of my favorites. “The Wind and the Willows” and the entire Chronicles of Narnia series were – and still are – favorites. And they all have important animal characters, which says something. I also was lucky enough to have a lot of Maurice Sendak books around. My mother was an artist and I think she liked his draughtsmanship. I think these books influenced my imagination.

If you could recommend one book or author to our readers, what would it be?

Wow, that’s hard. How about I cheat a little?
If you like in-depth history, really learning how people probably thought, I’d recommend Hilary Mantel, specifically her “A Place of Greater Safety” about the French Revolution.
If you love fantasy, go for the gold standard: J.R.R. Tolkein’s “The Lord of the Rings.” I still re-read those books regularly! Oh, and Naomi Novik’s Temeraire books.
I recently read Geoff Dyer’s “Jeff in Venice/Death in Varanasi,” and I loved that. It really made an impression on me. So, hmm... if you think you’d like a sort-of-experimental two-part book about love and loss and what our lives may be about, I’d say, try that!
And if you love mysteries, well, my personal favorites are Donna Leon, Colin Cotterill, Tana French, and Henning Mankell.

Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?

Yes: do it. Write regularly. Make yourself write. And then re-read what you’ve written. Just writing is fun and good for the soul, but the way you get better is by reading what you’ve written. Often in the first draft, what you think you wrote – what you wanted to get on the paper – isn’t there. Get good readers, readers you trust, who will give you honest opinions. Keep writing and re-writing, and don’t give up.

Do you belong to a critique group and do you think they are helpful?

I do not. I have heard of critique groups that were useful, especially for beginning writers. The problem is that it is hard to critique well. Every story can be written in a different way by a different person, and what you want is criticism about your  writing – not someone saying, “well, I’d make the hero into a heroine and change her hairstyle.” If you can find a group that won’t do that. That will simply say, “This part seems wordy” or “I don’t know why, but I’m not feeling it on this page,” and send you back to work on it, then that’s great! I really trust a few longtime readers – and my editors, of course!

Can you give us a preview of upcoming books to look for?

Well, in “Cats Can’t Shoot,” Pru is called to the scene of a “cat shooting.” At first she’s horrified – has someone shot a cat? When she gets there, she realizes that in fact the cat, a white Persian, is accused of accidentally setting off the rare antique dueling pistol that has killed her owner....

In “Grey Expectations,” Dulcie is delving into a rare books collection while working on her thesis when one of the most prized pieces, the Dunster Codex, goes missing. Her friend Trista seems to have some ideas about who might have taken it, only then Trista disappears, and the only clues seem to implicate Dulcie in the theft, and worse...

Any booksignings coming up?

Yes, indeed! I’m not getting to any of the big conferences this year, but I have a few signings in New England this spring. The first is April 19 at Harvard Book Store. In fact, if people can’t make it but they want a signed, personalized book, they can call the store and order one. I’ll sign it and the store will ship it. I’d also invite people to visit my website at http://www.cleasimon.com, because I’m always adding more.

Thank you for taking the time visit with us, Clea!

Thank you! Happy reading.

Book Giveaway and Review: Murder Buys a T-shirt by Christy Fifield

Genre:
Cozy Mystery

Format:
Paperback

Publisher:
Berkley Prime Crime Mystery

Release Date:
March 2012

Glory Martine loves the quaint souvenir shop she inherited from her great-uncle Louis. Not only did she get a shop filled with collectibles and mementos, she also inherited his parrot, Bluebeard. The shop is situated in the small town of Keyhole Bay in Florida, where everyone knows everyone else’s business.

When the town’s football hero, Kevin Stanley, dies in a car accident, Bluebeard becomes uncontrollable. He’s destroying the shop and he begins uttering words that lead Glory to the conclusion that this death was no accident. She’s not about to tell the authorities or her friends that her shop is haunted and her pet parrot says it’s murder, so she has no choice but take matters into her own hands and search for the truth herself.

Glory manages to take some time for herself when she meets the new owner of the bookstore across the street. The attraction is mutual, but obstacles are continually thrown in their path.

This is the first book in a brand new series, “A Haunted Souvenir Shop Mystery” and it’s off to a delightful start. The characters in this book immediately feel like old friends. Sometimes new characters can feel stiff in a first book, but not this cast. They were all well written and realistic. I even loved the belligerent parrot. LOL

The storyline is a solid one with the mystery moving along at a good pace. I must admit, I wasn’t too surprised at “whodunit” , but that didn’t ruin the book for me. I enjoyed reading how they all got to the ending and how it all unraveled. Besides, there were a couple of other possibilities so I wasn't 100% certain.

A nice feature - at the end of the book there are several pages of "Down-Home" dinner recipes. I wouldn't mind trying a few myself, especially the banana pudding. It sounds yummy!

It's a fun book that will make the dreariest of days a little brighter. I already miss the characters and I’m looking forward to the next book.

and it also gets...

Blog Tour: Shore Excursion by Marie Moore

Genre:
Suspense/Thriller

Format:
EBook (Available in paperback.)

Publisher:
Camel Press

Release Date:
April, 2012

Native Mississippian, Sidney Marsh, is part of a vanishing breed – a travel agent living in New York. Most people book their trips online, but Sidney is determined to prove that that the more traditional travel agent is still necessary. Her latest assignment is to escort a group of eccentric senior citizens, known as the “High Steppers” on a cruise through Scandinavia. Sidney envisions a peaceful trip filled with museums, tours and shopping but what she ends up with is dead bodies turning up all around her and targeting the “High Steppers”!

Along with her business associate and best friend, Jay Wilson, they try to figure out who could be responsible for such horrible crimes. The captain of the ship, as well as his staff, do not seem interested and want to keep things hush hush. This does not suit Sidney at all, even though Jay warns her to stay out of it. Sidney feels responsible for the safety of her tour group, but when her own life is in danger, she starts to have second thoughts and doesn’t know who to trust.

This is an exciting suspense/thriller with all the ingredients to keep readers at the edge of their seat. It has romance, adventure and quite a bit of mystery all tossed into one huge, compelling story. I have to admit, the killer’s identity surprised me. Just when you think the book has come to a satisfying conclusion, Ms. Moore throws in a curveball you won’t see coming. I know I didn’t and I can usually figure these things out.

This is the first book in the Sidney Marsh series and I’m looking forward to reading the next one.

Marie Moore Bio:

Shore Excursion is Marie Moore’s first novel, but not her first writing experience, and like Sidney Marsh, she is a native Mississippian. She graduated from Ole Miss, married a lawyer in her hometown, taught junior high science, raised a family, and worked for a small weekly newspaper, first as a writer and later as Managing Editor. She wrote hard news, features and a weekly column, sold ads, did interviews, took photos, and won a couple of MS Press Association awards for some of her stories.

In 1985, Marie left the newspaper to open a retail travel agency. She completed agency and computer training with Airlines Reporting Corporation, Delta Airlines and TWA, earned her CTC (Certified Travel Counselor) designation, and joined the American Society of Travel Agents (ASTA), International Air Transport Association (IATA), and Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA). For the next 15 years, she managed her agency, sold travel, escorted group tours, sailed on 19 cruises, and visited over 60 countries. Much of the background of Shore Excursion comes from that experience.

Marie also did location scouting and worked as the local contact for several feature films, including Heart of Dixie, The Gun in Betty Lou’s Handbag, and Robert Altman’s Cookie’s Fortune.

In mid-1999, because of her husband's work, Marie sold the travel agency and moved to Jackson, MS, then New York City, Anna Maria Island, FL, and Arlington, VA. She and her husband now live in Memphis, TN and Holly Springs, MS.

Marie is a member of Sisters in Crime.

In the first book of the Catherine O’Brien mystery series, the detective finds herself involved in investigating a high profile murder. A prominent business man is found dead at his Grand Avenue Hill home and the chief of police want Catherine and her partner Louise to quickly solve this case.
