Booking Through Thursday - Biographies

This week's question...

There are so many crappy biographies … would you rather read a poorly-written biography of a fascinating life, OR an exquisitely well-written, wonderful read of one of a not-so-interesting life?

My answer...

First of all, I'd much rather read something well-written in any genre than something poorly written. I'm sure everyone feels that way. Why waste time with crappy writing?

But...I'm not big on biographies in the first place. So, if I'm going to read one, it has to be about someone I'm interested in. If I have no interest, I won't read it whether it's good writing or not. Bios just aren't my thing, although I've read some good ones over the years, but they are few and far between.

If I were to start a book on someone I'm interested in and found it to be poorly written, I wouldn't bother continuing. I wouldn't force myself to read it.

Recently I listened to Tina Fey's auto biography and that was fantastic. It was written well, presented funny on the audio and she was someone I was interested in. She fit my criteria perfectly :)

  2. You & I have pretty much the same answer...Looks like a lot of people won't put up with crappy writing just because somebody's led a fascinating life.

  3. Exactly -- why waste time on poor writing, whatever the genre? I suspect most readers probably feel that way.

  5. I could trudge past poor writing if the story was very interesting.

  6. I have heard good things about Tina Fey's book. I don't often read biographies. I may have to make an exception for that one.
