Top Ten Tuesday-Bookish Pet Peeves

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl

This week, the topic is My Bookish Unpopular Opinions.  I was drawing a blank on this, so I decided to make a list of my Bookish Pet Peeves.  These are bookish things that drive me crazy.

1.  This happens mostly in romances, which is why I don't read as many as I used to.  When the conflict between two people could be easily solved just by speaking to each other.  If two people are so in love, this shouldn't be so difficult.

2.  This happens mostly in cozy mysteries - the amateur sleuth (who usually isn't in the law field) demands the police share their info in a murder case.  It's one thing to do your own investigation, but to think the police are obligated to share...um...no.

3.  When the characters depicted on the cover have no resemblance to the ones written about.  If a character has blonde hair, the cover should match.  If the character is supposed to be older, the cover shouldn't show someone in their 20's, etc etc etc.

4.  Don't put a cute animal on the cover if there are no cute animals in the story.  It feels like they are trying to appeal to animal lovers, but it has nothing to do with the book.  It's not necessary.

5.  This goes back to when I used to read print books.  I hate when the print would come off on my fingers.

6.  When I used to borrow print library books, the people who borrowed the books previously would leave crumbs, hair, dirt, all kinds of things between the pages.  Yuck!

7. I really dislike getting a book only to find out it's part of a series and there are many books before it that you have to read.  I wish they would put the book # on the cover...Book 1, Book 2, etc.  That way you know it's part of a series and decide for yourself if you want to read a book in the middle of it.

8.  It really annoys me when I get a book only to find it's a re-release of an older book that I already read.  Now it might have a different cover or even a different title.  I wish there was a way to indicate a re-release on the cover too.

9.  Another thing that gets me is when someone gives a low rating to a book - not because they read it, but because they don't like the author, don't like the cover, the title, the synopsis...whatever the reason.  Only someone who actually read a book should rate it, IMO.

10.  I wish libraries had more of a choice for borrowing e-books.  I had a nice library in New York for that, but it's a little different here.  Although, my TBR is big enough as it is.

Okay, those are my complaints for the week.  LOL

What's on your list this week?

  1. Oh the amount of times I've yelled 'just talk to him' at a character in romance book! Of course, the book would then be about 1/3 of the length and have less plot but I'd be so much more satisfied

  2. I absolutely agree with 1, 2,and 3. I don't read cozy mysteries for that reason. I want the nosy person arrested.
I read one series where the cover art shows a woman in skimpy clothes with tattoos. The character is a mechanic with no tattoos.

  3. The review bombing is really frustrating. I go and see a bunch of terrible reviews and sometimes has nothing to do with anything that makes sense!

  4. Great list, Yvonne. Before I subscribed to Audible and Chirp, I felt the same way about library stock for audio as you do for e-books. Your number 3 sounds similar to one on my list about covers. Number 2 would bug me too.

    Thanks for sharing.

  5. Miscommunication is a huge problem I have with a lot of books, not just romance. If the characters are adults, shouldn't they act like it? Why do they always think they're mind readers? Ugh!

  6. Agreed with the cover thing! That would be great. :)

  7. I agree with all of these, especially #6. I never eat or drink when I am reading a library book. XO

  8. You've raised important concerns, especially #6. My children knocked a library book off the counter once and it landed in the dirty mop bucket! I was mortified and took it back and paid for it, and also ordered them another and donated it.

  9. You're so right about the cozy mystery point! Why would the police share confidential information about an ongoing case? It's pretty ridiculous in my opinion :)

  10. Yes to all of these but especially 1 and 2! I read a lot of both cozies and romance and these are my least favorite things. I end up screaming at characters to "just talk to each other!" and I will usually give up on a series if the amateur sleuth starts demanding people share information.

  11. I can't imagine a random person walking into a police station and demanding to see murder evidence. You have to be bold to attempt that!
