Review: Affinities by Chris Hollis

Genre:
Psychological Thriller

Format:
E-Book

Publisher:
Amazon Digital Services

Release Date:
March 2013

Andrew Goodwin hears voices in the middle of the night. These voices are keeping him trapped in his own home. When he tries to leave or call for help, he can’t. He is convinced he’s been kidnapped and being held hostage, but it’s impossible to prove since he hasn’t seen anyone. In fact, he isn’t even given a chance to stay awake for any length of time.

If there was only some way he can get his life back and find out who is doing this to him and why, but his moments of consciousness are few and far between.  One day he wakes up with bruises and blood all over him, making him more and more desperate.  He becomes a prisoner of his own body.

This is an extremely difficult book to summarize as I didn’t want to give anything away. It's a compelling and captivating story that will keep you on the edge of your seat. I didn’t want to stop reading until I knew what was going on and the reasons for this. Just when I thought I figured it out, it turns out I was wrong.

The characters are well written and larger than life. The storyline is clever, intriguing and fascinating. It’s a book of suspense, drama and even a little of the paranormal mixed in to create a blend that readers will find gripping. I can’t say enough good things about this book – another author to add to my “must read” list!

Blog Tour: Grim by Joseph Spencer (Review, Guest Post and Giveaway!)

About the Book

In a gritty town rife with organized crime, dirty cops and corrupt politicians, Detective Adam White stands alone as the people’s symbol of justice and hope for a brighter future. He’s cracked the biggest cases, and stood up to the crime families who’ve torn apart Prairieville with their power struggles. He’s gorgeous, humble and incorruptible; a crime fighter so pure that the locals nicknamed him the White Knight.

What the people don’t know is their reluctant hero is cracking before their eyes. Ten years have passed since a pack of bank robbers gunned down his wife in the street. He’s relentlessly worked every case he could get his hands on since that night with the hopes of finding some link to her killer, but every lead always winds up a dead end. He made a vow on her death bed that he wouldn’t stop looking or move on with his life, personal or otherwise, until her killer was either dead or behind bars.

His obsession is starting to affect his work, including a new set of murders which are eerily similar to cold cases in which a gangland legend called The Reaper is the main suspect. A routine canvas of the area in which the bodies were found led Detective White to Heath Grim, a reclusive millionaire with grisly facial scars and a past which doesn’t quite add up. There’s something about his story which makes Detective White curious to dig deeper into his background.

Just as Detective White closes in on his killer, the mob hatches an elaborate scheme which could cost him everything. In his moment of need, an unlikely ally presents a way out of the plot against him and information on his wife’s killer. However, it leaves Prairieville’s paragon of justice with a moral dilemma. Can he abandon all of the heroic ideals upon which he’s based his life and become the type of man he’s hunted for so long to settle a score with his wife’s killer?

My Review

Grim by Joseph Spencer is a crime novel filled with everything from murders to organized mobsters to a tormented war veteran to a hero detective.  Mix them together and you get a gory, gritty and captivating story.

This book isn't for the feint of heart though.  The gore factor is quite high!  If you are looking for a simple crime story, you won't get it with this book.  It's a complex story with complex and intriguing characters.  One you start reading, you won't be able to stop.

Great paranormal places to visit for ideas

When they open a book, readers love to be transported to places they’ve never visited or could never dream to visit in real life. Even the most talented writers can’t fully rely on their imaginations alone all the time to dream up these otherworldly settings for their fiction work. Sometimes, there’s nothing like real life experiences to spur the creative juices when you sit down to start a project.

With that in mind, I’d like to suggest places to visit if possible which could inspire you to create the perfect place for a project being stalled by an uncertainty of where to place the action. Since I write thriller fiction with a paranormal slant, I’ve come up with a list of place close to where I live in the Midwest for you to check out if you’re also an adventurer who doesn’t mind a good scare once in a while.

1.      Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum (Reston, West Va.)
This mental illness facility opened in 1864 and housed 2,400 patients in its peak in the 1950s. This National Historic Landmark is the largest hand-cut stone masonry building in the United States, and reportedly second-largest in the world to the Kremlin in Moscow. SyFy’s Ghost Hunters and Ghost Hunters Academy and Travel Channel’s Ghost Adventures have investigated reported sightings of apparitions, unexplainable sounds, and other paranormal activity. Daytime tours of all four floors are available and cost $35. For info, visit http://trans-alleghenylunaticasylum.com.

2.     The Waverly Hills Sanatorium (Louisville, Ky.)
Construction of this building started in 1908, but the current massive, gothic-style, collegiate structure didn’t open for business until 1926. The facility could house up to 400 patients and served as a tuberculosis hospital until 1961, when the vaccine which cured TB rendered the hospital obsolete. SyFy’s Ghost Hunters and Ghost Hunters Academy and Travel Channel’s Ghost Adventures have also investigated reports of paranormal activity. Daily public tours cost $22 and private tours are available. For info, visit http://therealwaverlyhills.com.

3.     Ohio State Reformatory (Mansfield, Ohio)
Fans of the 1994 film The Shawshank Redemption may want to visit this haunted prison where it was filmed. The prison opened in September of 1896, housing its first 150 offenders. More than 155,000 men called the prison home for various stretches before it closed on December 31, 1990. There are both historical and ghost tours available for visitors and a tour related to the movie as well. For info, visit www.mrps.org.

4.     Abraham Lincoln’s Ghost Walk (Springfield, Ill.)
For those who like to mix historical and paranormal sites, consider visiting Illinois’ state capital to go on a 10-block, 90-minute walking which uses President Lincoln’s sites as the backdrop for the scoop on Honest Abe’s paranormal tales. The tour covers his last visit to his law office,  his funeral in the capitol, his haunted home, Mary Lincoln’s séances, and the attempted grave robbery. There are other tours including a haunted dead walk which includes alleged paranormal activity in the old Virgil Hickox House and a more traditional historical tour of Lincoln’s life in Springfield. For more info, visit www.springfieldwalks.com.

5.     Missouri State Penitentiary (Jefferson City, Mo.)
This historic prison received its first inmate in 1836, just 14 years after Jefferson City became the state capital. Only five years later, an officer died during a prison escape. Executions were conducted on site. When the prison closed in 2004, it had served as the oldest prison (168 years) west of the Mississippi River. A guided public tour which ventures through dungeon cells and a gas chamber costs $95. Private tours also are available.  For more info, visit www.missouripentours.com.

Blog Tour: What A Mother Knows by Leslie Lehr

Genre:
Fiction

Format:
Received e-ARC from NetGalley

Publisher:
Sourcebooks Landmark

Release Date:
May 2013

Hollywood producer Michelle Mason is finally going home after spending many months in a coma. She doesn’t remember anything that happened on that fateful day when she was driving with a local rock star in her passenger seat and the car crashed.

Michelle is more than ready to go home and get her life back to normal, although it will mean needing physical therapy for her arm, which is practically useless, and facing a lawsuit for her part in the accident. It’s not long before she realizes her husband and everyone around her is keeping a huge secret. Her 16 year old daughter, Nikki, disappeared not long after the accident. Nikki could hold the answers to what really happened in that car, but more than that, Michelle wants her daughter back.

After learning that her husband, Drew, didn’t even tell her their daughter was missing and apparently gave up ever seeing her again, Michelle sets off to find their daughter on her own. Both family and friends discourage her from looking for Nikki but Michelle perseveres at great cost to herself. Nothing is more important to her than her children and, with one of them missing, she’s determined to find her child.

The storyline grabbed me right off the bat. I love a good mystery and through most of the book I was coming up with my own scenarios of what occurred during the accident and why Nikki’s disappearance didn’t seem to concern anyone except Michelle.

I liked Michelle, but I didn’t particularly find the other characters very likeable or sympathetic. I was really annoyed with Michelle’s husband. Drew didn’t seem to care about their daughter at all. In fact, as soon as Michelle returned home after being in a coma, he went to work 3000 miles away. Really? Gee, what a loving husband. Drew wasn’t even a huge presence in the book.

Michelle’s friends? Well, they aren’t my idea of friends. They didn’t support anything Michelle tried to do whether it was about her health or her search for her daughter.

I didn’t always agree with everything Michelle did, but with such a lack of support from anyone around her, who could blame her? Months in a coma and the first thing she has to do is run all over the country looking for her daughter.

However, this is Michelle’s story. It’s about her strength, determination and the love she has for her daughter. You could feel that throughout the entire book. It’s well written and fast-paced. Readers will be anxious for Michelle to have a happy ending. I just wish the character had a little more support from the people around her.

Notorious Nineteen by Janet Evanovich

Genre:
Mystery

Format:
Audio

Publisher:
Random House

Release Date:
November 2012

Stephanie Plum is back for her 19th book! This time she has to find Geoffrey Cubbin. A man about to go on trial for embezzling. He mysteriously disappears from the hospital after undergoing emergency surgery. She also takes on a side job of escorting Ranger to a wedding and finds herself as a bridesmaid.

This is the last book that's been released in this series. #20 will be coming out in November. I'm actually caught up, what a surprise! This is a series I truly enjoyed listening to although there are things about Stephanie that still bother me. There's juggling two men, which I've already mentioned in my previous reviews. Then, although this isn't Stephanie's fault LOL, the constant blowing up of her cars. It was funny the first couple of times in the earlier books, but now it's just overkill. Nobody can be that unlucky with cars, not even in fiction :)

Overall, I enjoyed the earlier books much more than the later ones. I guess because it was a fresh, new series with new characters. By the time the 19th book rolled around, the characters and storylines were more repetitive than anything else. Will I continue listening to this series? Yes, I can't help myself. Once I've gone this long with a series, I won't stop until the series stops. I love the narration and some of the scenes are still funny. Also, it makes my commute to and from work a bit easier.

Review: Explosive Eighteen by Janet Evanovich

Genre:
Mystery

Format:
Audio

Publisher:
Random House Publishing

Release Date:
November 2011

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Bounty hunter Stephanie Plum’s life is set to blow sky high when international murder hits dangerously close to home, in this dynamite novel by Janet Evanovich.

Before Stephanie can even step foot off Flight 127 Hawaii to Newark, she’s knee deep in trouble. Her dream vacation turned into a nightmare, and she’s flying back to New Jersey solo. Worse still, her seatmate never returned to the plane after the L.A. layover. Now he’s dead, in a garbage can, waiting for curbside pickup. His killer could be anyone. And a ragtag collection of thugs and psychos, not to mention the FBI, are all looking for a photograph the dead man was supposed to be carrying.

Only one other person has seen the missing photo—Stephanie Plum. Now she’s the target, and she doesn’t intend to end up in a garbage can. With the help of an FBI sketch artist Stephanie re-creates the person in the photo. Unfortunately the first sketch turns out to look like Tom Cruise, and the second sketch like Ashton Kutcher. Until Stephanie can improve her descriptive skills, she’ll need to watch her back.

Over at the bail bonds agency things are going from bad to worse. The bonds bus serving as Vinnie’s temporary HQ goes up in smoke. Stephanie’s wheelman, Lula, falls in love with their largest skip yet. Lifetime arch nemesis Joyce Barnhardt moves into Stephanie’s apartment. And everyone wants to know what happened in Hawaii?

Morelli, Trenton’s hottest cop, isn’t talking about Hawaii. Ranger, the man of mystery, isn’t talking about Hawaii. And all Stephanie is willing to say about her Hawaiian vacation is . . . It’s complicated.

My thoughts...

Like I said last week after I listened to Smokin' Seventeen, I'm finding myself getting hooked on the series again. Kind of silly since I'm listening to #19 now #20 won't be released until November. I'll have to wait for the library to get in the audio of that one.

I really thought I'd stop reading this series, but I kept at it and feel like I'm listening to an episode of a TV show each time.

There's not much of a review to write as - even though I'm enjoying it - the plots pretty much remain the same - cars blow up, people go missing, Stephanie's life is always in danger and she can't choose a man. I'm still loving the things Lula and Grandma Mazur say. They are fun characters. I admit I'm still annoyed that Stephanie can't choose either Morelli or Ranger. I guess the part that makes me nuts is that she seems to be in love with Morelli but doesn't have a problem sleeping with both of them. Somehow that just isn't a quality for a heroine to have in my eyes.

Have any of you seen the movie One for the Money with Katherine Heigl?  I haven't seen it yet, but I can't see Heigl as Stephanie.  Eventually I'll get around to watching it but I'm not all that anxious.  I always thought of Sandra Bullock in the role.

A Killer Read by Erika Chase (Giveaway and Interview!)

Genre:
Cozy Mystery

Format:
Paperback

Publisher:
Berkley Prime Crime Mystery

Release Date:
April 2012

Teacher Lizzie Turner loves her mystery books and is very excited for the first meeting of the Ashton Corners Mystery Readers and Cheese Straws Society. The meeting is held in her friend Molly Matthew’s mansion. Suddenly real life becomes more intriguing than the group’s fiction read when a stranger wanders into Molly’s home and winds up dead. The murder weapon turns out to be part of Molly’s antique gun collection.

When the reading group members become the prime suspects, Lizzie is determined to prove they had nothing to do with the death. She mysteriously begins to receive chapters from a manuscript and wonders if they are connected to the murder.

Added to the mystery is a bit of romance. Lizzie had a high school crush on the local police chief and the feelings surface again. If she’d only stay out of his investigation, their relationship would be perfect, but Lizzie has no intentions of letting that happen.

This is the first book in a new cozy series. Of course this book has been in my review pile for a year, so I guess it’s not all that new since there is already a second book released and a new one coming out soon. I’m just sorry it took so long for me to read.

Setting a mystery to the backdrop of a reading group is perfect for me. It gives us a small group of characters – each with their own personalities and quirkiness. I know I will enjoy re-visiting with these people in future books. My only complaint was that there are two beautiful cats on the cover but they didn’t have enough to do in the book. You know me and cats. LOL The cats have great names though – Edam and Brie.

Each chapter begins with a quote from other mystery stories. I thought that was a nice addition. The story moved at a nice pace and I tried so hard to figure out whodunit and I came to all the wrong conclusions. That’s a good thing! I like being surprised.

This series is off to a wonderful start. Looking forward to the next one.

Interview With Author Erika Chase

Socrates’ Book Review Blog and Socrates’ Cozy Café would like to welcome author Erika Chase to our little corner of the world.  Erika is the author of An Ashton Corners Book Club Mystery series.  Her first book is “A Killer Read” which I recently had the pleasure of reading and reviewing.

Let the questions begin…

  1. Who is the greatest influence in your writing career?

My good friend Mary Jane Maffini, who is role model of good writing and promotional skills, plus being very supportive. Also, my critiquing group, The Ladies Killing Circle – we’ve been through a lot in the 20+ years we’ve been together and we’ve all grown in our writing skills. But, way back at the start of it, my eighth grade English teacher, Mr. Ross, who thought I could write and gave me good marks for my short stories.

  1. As a child, did you read mysteries?

I read widely but really enjoyed the Nancy Drew books as well as Trixie Belden. In fact, Trixie was my favorite for a long time and I’ve lately begun buying old copies when I come across them.

  1. Do you have any favorite authors or books to recommend?

My favorites often change according to what I’m reading or what mood I’m in. I always buy the latest books by Andrea Camilleri and Martin Walker, probably because I’m such an armchair traveler. And, I’m always ready for a book by Mary Jane Maffini. Love her cozies – all of them, especially her new series written as Victoria Abbott.

  1. Do you outline a book before you begin?  In other words, do you know who did it from the beginning or are you as surprised as the readers are?

I used to wing it when writing, trusting the plot to unfold as the characters did their thing. However, my editor at Berkley Prime Crime likes seeing a synopsis and I’m now in the habit of writing them. I find it works as a road map if I lose my way or make a wrong turn. However, sometimes I continue on that wrong road and it turns out right.

  1. Do you have any idea how long this series will go?  Do you have ideas for future storylines?

Book #3, Cover Story comes out in August and I’m working on the fourth book, Book Fair and Foul for next year. I have a couple of ideas beyond that and hopefully, will be able to use them. Sales are such an important factor is the longevity of a series, so we’ll see.

  1. What do you think of the current ereader explosion?  Do you like ebooks?

I’m amazed at how quickly all new technology bursts onto the scene and takes over. I’m all in favor of whatever helps the reader to do just that. However, I personally am not a big fan. I do take ebooks along when traveling but prefer the traditional paper variety when at home. Besides, they make a great decorative statement.

  1. How long does it take for you to write a book?

I have a 9-month deadline for each book however, the first draft takes about six months and the remaining time, I’m re-writing and polishing until it’s due.

  1. How did you feel when your first book was published?  What was your first published work?

I have no words to describe the feeling of that first book being published, not a good thing for a writer to admit. I will attempt to though by saying I felt joy, gratitude and pride.  A Killer Read is my first novel to be published (but not the first I’ve written -- no more will be said about that :). I’ve also had several short stories published, and was short-listed for an Arthur Ellis Award for Best Short Story from Crime Writers of Canada.

  1. What kind of environment do you do your actual writing in?  Describe the setting for us.

Music plays a large role in my life and I always have it on in the background when writing. It’s usually classical music that can be unobtrusive but sometimes, depending on the scene, I’ll choose a CD with more vigor, like the soundtrack from The Big Easy.

  1. Have you done book signings?  What kind of experience have you had with fans?

I’ve done several book signings and thoroughly enjoy them. It’s such a pleasure to meet readers and talk about mysteries.  It’s all been good although there’s always someone who says she or he never reads fiction. Hmmm.

  1. Can you give us a sneak peek into your future releases?

The third book, Cover Story, immerses the book club sleuths in murder, mayhem and counterfeiting when an old childhood friend of Molly Mathews’s returns to town as a newly-published author. She’s a colorful lady and comes with a few skeletons in the closet. And as we all know, that door never stays shut.

Book Fair and Foul, the following book, takes a peak at the lives of authors attending book fairs and festivals. Of course, there’s a murder and of course, the book club gets involved, especially after one of their own becomes the prime suspect.

Thank you so much, Erika, for taking the time to visit with us.

Watch the Trailer

My Review

Christine Sterling is not happy with retirement in the small town of Grass Valley, California.  For starters, her husband Jesse is more interested in his new hobby than in her.  Feeling lost and on her own, Christine takes an interest in her mysterious neighbors and becomes suspicious when Lila Payne appears scared, hungry and bruised.

Used to his wife's overactive imagination, Jesse brushes off Christine's concerns, which only frustrates her more.  When their beloved dog Molly disappears, along with Lila, Jesse realizes his wife was right.  They work together to get to the bottom of things and find them.

This is a light inspirational cozy mystery with a wonderful cast of characters. I must admit, though, that Christine reminded me very much of Mrs. Kravitz, the nosey neighbor on the old tv series "Bewitched".  LOL  Christine has a good heart and means well, but she does jump to conclusions with very little evidence, which is why the police couldn't take her seriously.  Of course, in the end, she was right on the money.

Christine is a character readers can truly care about and a person you can meet in everyday life.  I think readers will love her.  The story is fast-paced and will keep readers engrossed.  Catherine Leggitt has a great talent for storytelling.  This is the first book in this series and I am certainly looking forward to reading the next one.

Stop by tomorrow as the author will be by to guest blog about the animals featured in the book.

About the Author

Catherine Leggitt is an author and inspirational speaker. A native Californian born in the Bay Area, she raised two daughters, taught school, and cared for her aging parents in southern California before retiring to the north end of the state. Proud grandmother of six brilliant children, Catherine studies the Bible, reads, serves as a leader in Bible Study Fellowship, and sings in the church choir.

Catherine wrote a trilogy called the Christine Sterling Mysteries, which include PAYNE & MISERY, THE DUNN DEAL, and PARRISH THE THOUGHT. The first book won 2nd place at the Orange County Christian Writers Conference in May, 2010. It was published by Ellechor Publishing in 2011. THE DUNN DEAL and PARRISH THE THOUGHT were published in 2012 by Ellechor Publishing. PARRISH THE THOUGHT made the quarterfinals in the 2011 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Contest.

In addition, Catherine has completed a fourth novel with different characters called DYING TO BE NOTICED and coauthored a memoir for Sam Contino called STREET SMARTS.

When called upon to share her story, Catherine’s main themes come from Christine’s struggles in her books, which also happen to be some of the things Catherine struggles with. Thus, since PAYNE & MISERY addresses complaining, the first message, titled Always Choose Joy, centers on how to be thankful and choose joy instead of misery. The spiritual theme of THE DUNN DEAL exposes with the nature of truth. Merely having faith is not enough. What we believe matters. Catherine named the second talk, Always Choose Truth. In PARRISH THE THOUGHT, Christine learns to love unlovable people, so Catherine calls the third message, Always Choose Love.

The Big Kitty by Claire Donally (Review and Giveaway!)

Genre:
Cozy Mystery

Format:
Paperback

Publisher:
Berkley Prime Crime Mystery

Release Date:
May 2012

After taking a leave of absence to care for her ill father, Sunny Coolidge loses her well paying newspaper job in New York City and returns to her home town of Kittery Harbor, Maine. She moves in with her father and is stuck in a low paying job which doesn’t even cover her expenses – not to mention her unreasonable and demanding boss.

When Ada Spruance, also known as the “Cat Lady”, asks Sunny to help locate a missing winning lottery ticket, Sunny agrees to help. When Sunny pays Ada a visit, she finds the woman dead at the bottom of her stairs. Originally called an accident, Sunny realizes it has to be murder.

One of Ada’s cats takes a liking to Sunny and decides to live with her and her father. Sunny’s father isn’t happy with the new living arrangements, but tolerates it. Shadow manages to work his way into Sunny’s heart.

With the help of a local detective, Will Price, Sunny does some investigating and gets a bit too close to the truth. She realizes Shadow may have witnessed the murder and now her own life is in jeopardy.

This is a fun story and the beginning of a brand new cozy mysteries series – starring a cat! You know a cozy mystery with a cat in the lead role is going to be a favorite of mine. Parts of the book are told from the cat’s point of view (no, he doesn’t speak to the humans, but we do get an insight as to what he’s thinking). The cat’s viewpoint sounds exactly the way I would expect a cat to think. The author obviously knows cats.

The story moved along at a quick pace and the ending was a big surprise to me. I loved the characters and really enjoyed the side romance of Sunny and Will. I can’t wait to read the second book of this series which is out in May.

You know I’m giving this one five kitties!

Vengeance in Death by J.D. Robb

Genre:
Suspense

Format:
Audio

Publisher:
Brilliance Audio

Release Date:
May 2008

Synopsis from Fantastic Fiction:

An Eve Dallas investigation. New York in the year 2058 is very different from the New York of today. Guns have been outlawed but lasers can kill, and the police still have a hefty job to do. Two men are discovered murdered. They have links - both with each other, and with Eve's new husband, Rourke.

My thoughts...

Another good entry in J.D. Robb's "In Death" series.  Plenty of mystery and excitement.  I love watching these characters grow and they do that with each book.  Eve and Roarke are a great couple.  I love how they stand by each other's side.  It also made for a nice diversion listening to this in the car.  Hopefully I can listen to the whole series this way.
