Booking Through Thursday - Book Gluttony?

Mariel suggested this week’s question

Book Gluttony! Are your eyes bigger than your book belly? Do you have a habit of buying up books far quicker than you could possibly read them? Have you had to curb your book buying habits until you can catch up with yourself? Or are you a controlled buyer, only purchasing books when you have run out of things to read?

My Answer...Book Glutton? Me? Nah, not even remotely possible...okay, that's a lie. I'm the definition of book gluttony. If I waited until I ran out of things to read, I'd never buy anything new. So, there's no choice but to just keep buying. How's that for a rationalization? LOL

Truth is, I have no control when it comes to books. I can't walk out of a bookstore without getting something. Usually it's more than one book. The funniest has to be when I go to places like WalMart. They have the Harlequin and Silhouette series books cheaper than the regular bookstores. Since I love those and buy quite a few each month, that's where I go. I can easily buy 10-15 at a time and the reactions from the cashier's is too funny. They all look at me and ask questions like "How long does it take to red those?" or "Is there a storm coming that we don't know about?" or - and this one I hate - "Aren't those all the same?" No, they aren't the same. I wouldn't buy 15 of the same book! It might not seem like it, but I do choose my books with care :) Kind of like my cat, he might look big and eat alot, but he's picky about what he eats :)

The other thing, since I work across the street from two huge book chains (sadly they recently closed the third one), where else would a book lover spend their lunch hour? When I get stressed at work (which is often), I go out and buy books. Another easy excuse I have - it eases my stress.

Bottom line...yes, I am a book glutton and I'm not even sorry about it. LOL How about you, are you a book glutton?

  1. Haha, that's true for me too as well! I couldn't go more than year without buying new books and I'd have to if I stopped until I'd run out. That wouldn't be fun at all.

  5. Meghan - I so agree! The fun for me is book shopping!

    Blodeuedd - Only a book a year???!

Shari - This particular cat pic isn't of my cat. It's one I got from Glitter Graphics, although my two cats seem pretty contented too. LOL

Ambrosia Jefferson - I see nothing wrong with book gluttony! (Plus it's so much fun - LOL)

  6. I think I'm guilty of presuming that those hallarquin books are all the same. :-) Bookshops are one of the most wonderful places on earth. So very, very hard to leave without buying anything, particularly since Penguin released their cheap, orange classic series. Ah, the torment!

  7. Two huge book chains across the street? Wow, I would spend my entire salary in there. And yes, I so agree that all M&B's and the likes are not similar. Hate people who say that.

  14. Instead of buying I borrow from the local library. I always borrow too many though and always have to bring back books that I haven't read. But I keep them on my TBR list with the hope that I will borrow it again or break down and buy it!

  15. Oooooh I surely am!!
True I stopped buying too much books from the bookstore but now I buy Ebooks online :) Isn't that convenient!!

  16. Proud to be one, but I try not to buy. I grab the ones that I'm most desperate to read and leave the rest on a list.

  17. It cracks me up when I check out 10 or more books from the library and they actually ask me if I plan to read all these books! When I tell them I read over 20 books a month they look at me with disbelief. I wish I had the guts to ask, is this is just a job to you?

  21. LOL @ the cashiers reactions.. yeah like you are gonna buy the same book 15 times over .. They should really learn customer relations ;)
You are one lucky lady to have the 2 bookstores close to your work place.. I know how stress releiving that is :)

  22. I'm a book glutton too but mostly from the library. I've been better lately but it's so hard not to bring them all home with me. I can't afford to get new books but I buy a lot of used from my library, the SPCA book barn and yard sales, etc. I get bags of those! The only problem is that they have been neglected since I started blogging and reviewing books. I'm trying to stay caught up on the new books so my older ones get left behind. So many good books, never enough time... *sigh*

  23. I just came off of a book-buying ban. I realized life is too short. Reading is a great passion to have so why not indulge?
