Today’s MUSING MONDAYS post is about the war books

With yesterday being Anzac Day, I thought I’d ask a theme question this week. Are you a reader of war books? And if so, do you have any favorites?

My answer...

This is easy enough. I don't read war books. It's not a genre I've been interested in, although I have read romances and other genres set around war times. The Dorothy Garlock I'm reading right now is set around WWII. But, I wouldn't call these war books. They just happened to use it for the setting, but the books definitely aren't about the war.

  1. I think the term "war books" needs further clarification. I don't read books about battles and such, but I've read many books set in WW II, and I recently read one set during the Vietnam war, The Lotus Eaters.

  3. the more I think about it, there are a number of books I have liked that were set during a war, but I really do not seek out that setting and would not consider myself a war book "fan".
actually. I am not really a fan of most historical novels... ;-)

  4. I mostly read romance book and as you mentioned some of them are set during wartime. Over all I would say that many of those were good but I am going venture out and say that what you specifically had in mind was more of a story built around a specific place during a war(maybe Hiroshima) or even a soldier's personal story either told by him or someone else.
I don't gravitate towards those types of stories. I don't even watch war movies. I find that they depress me quite a bit. So many injured and dead. I can't grasp it even though the purpose of it all might be for a better future (or at least that is what was said when it started).
Anyway, inspite of not liking these types of books/movies I did read one ages ago. Honestly it was more of an Anit-war book. It was called Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo. It was a seriously impactful book told from a soldier's point of view after he was seriously injured during WWI. originally published in 1939 I read this in the mid 90s and was amazed that even after 60 years the idea and message behind it was just as relevent at the time I read it. I imagine it would still be today too.
