The Weekend Review - January 28th-January 30th

The Sunday Post is a weekly meme hosted by Kimba the Caffeinated Book Reviewer ~ It's a chance to share news~ A post to recap the past week on your blog, showcase books and things we have received and share news about what is coming up on our blog for the week ahead.

If you'd like to participate with The Sunday Salon, it is now being hosted by Deb at Readerbuzz.

It’s Monday! What Are You Reading is a meme with a new host!  It's now being hosted by Kathryn at Book Date. This is where we share what we read this past week, what we hope to read this week…. and anything in between! This is a great way to plan out your reading week and see what others are currently reading as well… you never know where that next “must read” book will come from!

I'm also linking to  Stacking The Shelves which is hosted by Reading Reality.

Hi Everyone!

I hope everyone is having a great weekend.  My week was on the quiet side and I'm more than fine with that :) I've been fighting a cold (not Covid) all week.

I finished two books, continue to binge-watch Criminal Minds and discovered a "new-to-me" show on Peacock called The Poker Face.  It's good.

Last week I mentioned services like Hello Fresh for cooking meals at home.  Well, I had a Groupon so I tried it.  The food is good.  It's enough for 2 people, although the package said 2-4.  I'm not sure there would be enough for 4, but for the 2 of us it was more than enough.  The recipes were easy, and I loved having all the ingredients sent to me in one bag for each recipe.  However, I think it's kind of expensive, so I probably won't get it again unless I had another Groupon.

Not much else to report.  Our weather is decent...supposed to be in the 60's this weekend, which is low for the area but actually kind of nice to me.

I hope you all have a great week!

  2. I have a friend who swears by Hello Fresh... I see the benefit in it and I guess it helps break decision inertia as you know what you're cooking that day and don't need to think about it but, like yourself, I've always thought it was expensive for what it is... Good to have tried it though!

  3. I have heard the pre-packaged foods are expensive, but very convenient. I didn't cook last week at all; instead, we decided to eat down our freezer food. It was nice, but now I'm in the mood to cook again.

I hope you will take on Bakeries and Buffoonery soon.

  4. We did Hello Fresh for a long time and really liked it. We finally decided to take a break for a while, but I felt like it also made me better at cooking in general. Hope you love it!

  6. Sounds like you had a good week! I am curious about Poker Face but waiting for more episodes to come out before I try it...lol.

Have a great week and happy reading!

  8. We tried a couple of different meal delivery services around the time that DH had surgery. It was helpful since we usually cook together, and he was out-of-action for a while. We ended up with some new recipes in our repertoire, which we're still enjoying, but we've taken a break from the services. If we get bored with our cooking, we might try one again to freshen things up -- but not in the summer, we had problems with getting the food quickly enough to not spoil in the heat.

  9. I tried Hello Fresh too and agree with your comments. We are not big eaters and I found it barely feeds 2. It is an interesting way to try new things. I do think it would be a great idea if you were going away to a cottage for a couple of days. That way you would have everything you need and no need to go shopping.

  10. I keep getting recommendations for hello fresh from Amazon, but I haven't tried it yet. Uber Eats has been calling my name too, but I feel like I start that habit, I'll never quit.

  11. I keep thinking about those meal services, being alone I hate to cook and end up going out to eat all the time which isn't healthy. I feel like they're expensive, but I bet if I added up how much I spend on the way I do eat, it might even out. Looks like some good books, hope you enjoy them all!

  16. I've been curious about those meal prep services and have thought it might be fun to try for a little while, especially when I get into a rut and can't figure out what to cook. Your comments, small portions and expense, seem to line up with what other friends have said. Enjoy your books this week!

  17. I been seeing ads for some food services. It would be nice to have the ingredients deliver and you just cook them.
    Have a great week.

  18. I'm glad you are getting over your cold. I love how people now qualifying their illness by specifying it is not Covid! In our house, we are sort of hyper-aware because my husband has been advised by one of his doctors not to get boosted (I think the Dr. is wrong, but oh well...). So we are testing whenever we feel like we have anything coming on.

  19. Hope that cold is fleeing. Yes the food delivery sounds good and would be really useful if you were really busy or sick.

  20. I hope you feel better soon! Thanks for the review of Hello Fresh. I'm tempted to try it, but I'm worried that it's too expensive and not enough food.

  21. Glad you are feeling better. Every Plate is less expensive than Hello Fresh and just as good. We also have enjoyed Home Chef. Not sure on that price difference. It is so convenient and I love trying different things and having all the ingredients ready to go!

  22. You have some tempting titles! Anything "bookshop" always appeals to me. Here are my WEEKLY UPDATES

  23. I like the idea of meals delivered to my home, but it is the cooking part that I don't enjoy. I'd be looking for something that comes ready for the oven or microwave. Nice looking books too. Come see my week here. Happy reading!

  24. I like to get Blue Apron about once a month, I compare the cost to what I would spend for us to eat out if I didn't cook. I hope you enjoy To Kill a Mocking Girl!

  25. I only buy Hello Fresh on sale too. It's like shopping at Kohls or Old Navy.

  26. I can definitely see the cost issue with Hello Fresh. For me it ends up keeping us from eating out so much so it evens out. I'm glad you enjoyed it though. I'm sorry to hear you're fighting a cold. There's so much general gunk going around I'm tempted to hibernate! I hope you're having a wonderful week.
