The Lie by Fredrica Wagman

While sitting on a park bench, Ramona Smollens meets an older, strange man named Solomon Columbus. They share their thoughts and quickly become lovers. It’s not long before Ramona marries this man, escaping the dark secrets of her family life at home. Ramona and Solomon create their own family with a son of their own.

However, Ramona discovers that all is not perfect in her world and she finds herself wondering if she truly loves Solomon. She is not sexually aroused by her husband and fears something is wrong with her, but she is determined never to let him know the truth. She lies about her feelings. Then, she suspects her husband of telling lies of his own. Ramona is convinced he is cheating on her and she vows that no woman will come between them.

This book takes place in the 1950’s with Ramona idolizing Rita Hayworth. It is a cleverly put together story of one woman’s hidden secrets, fantasies and fears. Without giving anything away, the ending really gives you food for thought. I’m still trying to figure it out.

Ms. Wagman’s writing is poetic and flows so that the reader can feel Ramona’s thoughts as if they were happening to the reader. “The Lie” is very different from anything I’ve read. The writing style keeps you engaged in Ramona’s life and makes you keep reading. As a side note, I absolutely love this cover. It’s really lovely.

Sunday Salon - I think I'm a Reading Challenge Addict!

Against my better judgement, I signed up for two more reading challenges that J.Kaye is holding on her blog. Then I decided to host a couple more challenges myself. I'm a huge James Patterson fan, but I've been so behind on my reading that I figured a good way to catch up was to challenge myself. So, that's what I did :) Of course it's not the end of the world if I don't complete the challenges (I still have quite a few going on besides these), but it does help to keep me focused on my reading goals. Is there a 12-step program for challenge-aholics? LOL

As for my actual reading (I really need to stop being online so much so that I can devote more time to reading), I finished "The Summerhouse" by Jude Deveraux - loved it and posted my review. I'm almost finished with "The Lie" by Frederica Wagman. I'll post my review soon - a very strange, but interesting book.

2009/2010 Lynn Viehl's Darkyn Series Reading Challenge

I haven't read any of them, so I'll be starting at the beginning.

James Patterson Reading Challenge

Since I love James Patterson's books so much - even books other than the Women's Murder Club series - I decided to host one more challenge. This is for anything written by James Patterson. I don't know about the rest of you, but I have quite a few of his books in my TBR.

Here are the guidelines...

1. The challenge is to read at least 10 James Patterson books in a year. You do not need to make a list of what you will read now or, if you want, you can. However, nothing is written in stone and the books you list can be changed at any time. Overlapping books with other challenges is allowed.

2. As long as it's written by James Patterson, you can use the book in this challenge. Even if you are part of my Women's Murder Club challenge, you can overlap books and count them as part of this challenge.

3. All books need to be read between August 15, 2009 and August 15, 2010. Books read prior to August 15th don't count for this challenge.

4. If you want to participate, just post about it on your blog with a link back to here.

3. Audio and Ebooks are acceptable.
