Review: Spirit of Steamboat (A Walt Longmire Story) by Craig Johnson

Genre:
Mystery

Format:
E-Book (available as hardcover)

Publisher:
Viking Adult

Release Date:
October 2013

It’s the night before Christmas and widower Sheriff Walt Longmire is in his office reading “A Christmas Carol”. His daughter and his deputy are both away for the holidays leaving Walt to spend the holiday on his own. When a young woman stops by his office looking for the previous sheriff, Lucian Connally, Walt’s curiosity gets the best of him and he lends her a hand.

Connally now resides at a local assisted living facility and has already had a few too many holiday drinks by the time they arrive. He claims to have no idea who the young woman is. She’s disappointed and whispers a single word, “Steamboat”. It takes them all back to Christmas 1988 when a terrible accident leaves a young girl near death. Walt was a new sheriff and Connally recently retired. To make matters worse, there was a record-breaking blizzard tearing through the area.

The girl’s only chance for survival is a plane trip from Wyoming to a hospital in Denver in a decommissioned plane, piloted by a drunk World War II vet. Walt’s young daughter and wife are worried for his life, but Walt insists upon going as he couldn’t live with himself if the girl should die and they didn’t do everything possible to help.

This story is a short, holiday treat – a mix of the present with the past. You really don’t need to read the rest of this series to read this Christmas story. It’s a standalone as far as I can tell. I have only read one other book in this series and it was a holiday novella, as well. I do have the added benefit of watching the Longmire TV series on A&E. I’m not sure if that’s why I love these so much, but I do think this is a beautiful holiday read if you are looking for something quick to read.
