Spotlight/Guest Blog/Giveaway: The Glass Forest by Cynthia Swanson

About the Book

Genre: Historical Fiction, Suspense, Mystery
Publisher: Touchstone
Release Date: February 6, 2018

Synopsis from Goodreads...

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Bookseller comes a gripping literary suspense novel set in the 1960s about a deeply troubled family and three women who will reveal its dark truths.

In the autumn of 1960, Angie Glass is living an idyllic life in her Wisconsin hometown. At twenty-one, she’s married to charming, handsome Paul, and has just given birth to a baby boy. But one phone call changes her life forever.

When Paul’s niece, Ruby, reports that her father, Henry, has committed suicide, and that her mother, Silja, is missing, Angie and Paul drop everything and fly to the small upstate town of Stonekill, New York to be by Ruby’s side.

Angie thinks they’re coming to the rescue of Paul’s grief-stricken young niece, but Ruby is a composed and enigmatic seventeen-year-old who resists Angie’s attempts to nurture her. As Angie learns more about the complicated Glass family, staying in Henry and Silja’s eerie and ultra-modern house on the edge of the woods, she begins to question the very fabric of her own marriage.

Through Silja’s flashbacks, Angie’s discovery of astonishing truths, and Ruby’s strategic dissection of her parents’ state of affairs, a story of love, secrets, and ultimate betrayal is revealed.

Cynthia Swanson’s Book Club Picks

- By Cynthia Swanson

Authors are often asked what they like to read. Here are a few books that generated great discussions in my own book club – and others that I simply found thought-provoking.

Fiction

·  The Life We Bury by Allen Eskens. The author claims to write “mysteries with a literary edge” – and I'd say that’s an accurate description of this page-turner.

·  The Silent Sister by Diane Chamberlain. Part family saga, party mystery. Riley must determine what happened to the sister she’s long believed dead.

·  The Scribe of Siena by Melodia Winawer. Historical/fantasy fiction featuring a resourceful heroine and her charming love interest.

·  The Hours Count by Jillian Cantor. A “what if?” story about a fictitious neighbor of Ethel and Julius Rosenberg.

·  Bottomland by Michelle Hoover. Mystery, family, and culture collide in post-World War I American heartland.

Nonfiction
· Tender at the Bone: Growing Up at the Table
by Ruth Reichl. A bohemian memoir (complete with recipes) set in 1950s/60s Greenwich Village.

·  Mad Women: The Other Side of Life on Madison Avenue in the '60s and Beyond by Jane Maas. An entertaining look at life as an adwoman in New York City.

·  In Cold Blood by Truman Capote. The classic, bone-chilling tale (based on true events) of murder in the Midwest.

I hope these picks provide inspiration for your book club! For more of my favorites, follow me on Goodreads.
