Metro Girl by Janet Evanovich

Genre:
Mystery, Romantic Suspense

Format:
Audio

Publisher:
Harper Audio

Release Date:
July 2006

Alex "Barney" Barnaby races to Miami Beach, Florida in search of her missing brother "Wild Bill" Barnaby. She finds herself involved in high-speed car chases and Sam Hooker, a hot NASCAR driver.

Barney discovers that her brother "borrowed" Hooker's boat and sailed away. Hooker is quite anxious to find Bill, too, and he sticks by Barney's side through her investigation.

They find themselves in more danger than they bargained for.

My thoughts...

This was okay. I didn't like it nearly as much as I like the Stephanie Plum series. There was certainly potential, but it just fell short for me. Like I said it was an "okay" read - not great, not terrible. So, so. I listened to it on the way to work and sometimes it was hard to keep my concentration on it.

Audio Reviews

Genre:
Mystery, Paranormal

Format:
Audio

Publisher:
Recorded Books

Release Date:
2006

Synopsis from Fantastic Fiction:

Harper Connelly has what you might call a strange job: she finds dead people. She can sense the final location of a person who's passed, and share their very last moment. The way Harper sees it, she's providing a service to the dead while bringing some closure to the living-but she's used to most people treating her like a blood-sucking leech. Traveling with her step-brother Tolliver as manager and sometime-bodyguard, she's become an expert at getting in, getting paid, and getting out fast. Because for the living it's always urgent-even if the dead can wait forever.

My thoughts...

Good mystery and I really liked Harper and her step-brother. The town has your typically quirky characters that I love in my mysteries. This is the first book in the series and I'm definitely going to be catching up through audio books.

Genre:
Paranormal

Format:
Audio

Publisher:
Recorded Books

Release date:
May 2012

Synopsis from Fantastic Fiction:

With Felipe de Castro, the Vampire King of Louisiana (and Arkansas and Nevada), in town, it's the worst possible time for a body to show up in Eric Northman's front yard--especially the body of a woman whose blood he just drank.

Now, it's up to Sookie and Bill, the official Area Five investigator, to solve the murder. Sookie thinks that, at least this time, the dead girl's fate has nothing to do with her. But she is wrong. She has an enemy, one far more devious than she would ever suspect, who's out to make Sookie's world come crashing down.

My thoughts...

This is book #12 and another good entry in the Sookie Stackhouse series. I'm finding I'm not as excited about this series as I used to be but it's still fun and all my "friends" were there - Sookie, Eric, Bill, Alcide, Sam...

Disclosure: I took both audios from the library for my own reading enjoyment.

The Last Boy by Jane Leavy

Genre:
Non-Fiction

Format:
Audio

Publisher:
HarperAudio

Release Date:
November, 2010

Synopsis from Amazon.com

Jane Leavy, the acclaimed author of the New York Times bestseller Sandy Koufax: A Lefty's Legacy, returns with a biography of an American original—number 7, Mickey Mantle. Drawing on more than 500 interviews with friends and family, teammates, and opponents, she delivers the definitive account of Mantle's life, mining the mythology of The Mick for the true story of a luminous and illustrious talent with an achingly damaged soul.

Meticulously reported and elegantly written, The Last Boy is a baseball tapestry that weaves together episodes from the author's weekend with The Mick in Atlantic City, where she interviewed her hero in 1983, after he was banned from baseball, with reminiscences from friends and family of the boy from Commerce, Oklahoma, who would lead the Yankees to seven world championships, be voted the American League's Most Valuable Player three times, win the Triple Crown in 1956, and duel teammate Roger Maris for Babe Ruth's home run crown in the summer of 1961—the same boy who would never grow up.

As she did so memorably in her biography of Sandy Koufax, Jane Leavy transcends the hyperbole of hero worship to reveal the man behind the coast-to-coast smile, who grappled with a wrenching childhood, crippling injuries, and a genetic predisposition to alcoholism. In The Last Boy she chronicles her search to find out more about the person he was and, given what she discovers, to explain his mystifying hold on a generation of baseball fans, who were seduced by that lopsided, gap-toothed grin. It is an uncommon biography, with literary overtones: not only a portrait of an icon, but an investigation of memory itself. How long was the Tape Measure Home Run? Did Mantle swing the same way right-handed and left-handed? What really happened to his knee in the 1951 World Series? What happened to the red-haired, freckle-faced boy known back home as Mickey Charles?

"I believe in memory, not memorabilia," Leavy writes in her preface. But in The Last Boy, she discovers that what we remember of our heroes—and even what they remember of themselves—is only where the story begins.

My thoughts:

I’m a huge Yankee fan. My father grew up during the Mantle era, I grew up in the 70’s. I heard so many amazing things about Mickey Mantle and he was a great player. No denying that, but as a person, he was human. He cheated on his wife, who continued to stand by him until his death knowing that he cheated on her. He drank to the point of destroying his health. He ignored his children during the years they needed him the most.

It’s really a sad story. Mantle found out too late what was really important in life. From the sounds of the book, Mantle had quite a few regrets in life. Very very sad.

None of the stuff was really new to me. I had heard about all of it at one time or another, but I’m from New York and we hear about everything.

However, I liked the way the story unfolded in the audio version. The narrator alternated between the author and John Bedford Lloyd. Both of them kept my interest as I listened to this in the car. Once the book was over, I just felt sad. The man wasn’t a hero, he was a flawed human being.

Whisker of Evil by Rita Mae Brown

Genre:
Cozy Mystery

Publisher:
Recorded Books

Format:
Audio

Release Date:
March 2004

Synopsis from Fantastic Fiction:

A mysterious death in a Virginia farm town has the locals scratching their heads--while frisky feline Mrs. Murphy and her friends, fat-cat Pewter and corgi Tee Tucker, uncover clues as they curl their way around a cold-blooded killer.

This balmy summer in Crozet, Virginia, postmistress Mary Minor "Harry" Haristeen has a lot to think about. Things have been pretty cozy between her and her ex-husband, Fair and her beloved old post office is in danger of being replaced with a modern building--and modern rules. Harry's thoughtful contemplation is shattered the day she stumbles over a dead body near Potlicker Creek. Barry Monteith, the handsome local horse breeder, has been savagely murdered. A true ladies' man, Barry was known to have left a string of broken hearts behind him. But could a spurned lover be responsible for his untimely demise?

The plot only thickens when an autopsy reveals that Barry was infected with rabies weeks before he was killed. As usual, Harry can't resist doing a little digging--with Mrs. Murphy close by to warn of approaching danger. Harry makes a remarkable discovery in the creek--the class ring of Mary Pat Reines, a local woman who disappeared thirty years earlier along with her prized Thoroughbred stallion. Like Barry, Mary Pat was a successful horse breeder--and now all of Crozet is wondering if the two cases are linked. As the police struggle with the evidence, the pressure gets hotter than a June afternoon--especially when another person is found dead of less-than-natural causes. As usual, Mrs. Murphy and her crew are the first to sniff out the truth.

But if they don't find a way to help Harry piece together the puzzle, she could become the killer's next target--and even Mrs. Murphy's slinkiest moves won't be able to save her.

My Thoughts...

I've always loved this series.  Everything I love about cozies is involved - animals (particularly cats), a good mystery, a small town and great characters.  I've come to love the people of Crozet from Mrs. Murphy to Pewter to Tucker to their "mom" Harry (the rest of the town isn't bad either).

The only problem I had is that the audio version is a bit more difficult for me to focus on then the printed book.  I'm not sure if I'll try the next book as an audio or read it instead.  I might give the next audio a try.  It was nice company for my trip to work each day.

This Time Together by Carol Burnett

Genre:
Non-Fiction

Format:
Audio

Publisher:
Random House Audio

Release Date:
April 2010

Synopsis from Amazon.com:

THIS TIME TOGETHER is 100 percent Carol Burnett – funny, irreverent, and irresistible.

Carol Burnett is one of the most beloved and revered actresses and performers in America. The Carol Burnett Show was seen each week by millions of adoring fans and won twenty-five Emmys in its remarkable eleven-year run. Now, in This Time Together, Carol really lets her hair down and tells one funny or touching or memorable story after another – reading it feels like sitting down with an old friend who has wonderful tales to tell.

In engaging anecdotes, Carol discusses her remarkable friendships with stars such at Jimmy Stewart, Lucille Ball, Cary Grant, and Julie Andrews; the background behind famous scenes, like the moment she swept down the stairs in her curtain-rod dress in the legendary “Went With the Wind” skit; and things that would happen only to Carol – the prank with Julie Andrews that went wrong in front of the First Lady; the famous Tarzan Yell that saved her during a mugging; and the time she faked a wooden leg to get served in a famous ice cream emporium. This poignant look back allows us to cry with the actress during her sorrows, rejoice in her successes, and finally, always, to laugh.

My thoughts...

I enjoyed listening to this on my commute to and from work. It's been a very long time since I've seen Carol Burnett's show, but I used to love it when I was younger. She was always so funny. Listening to her tell us about her life - both the happy and sad things was very touching. I felt as if I was having a conversation with her.

I really enjoy listening to all the little Hollywood stories and all the moments in her life that she shares with readers and her fans. I could have listened for a long time to these stories and I hope there's another book on its way.

Chocolate Covered Murder by Leslie Meier

Genre:
Cozy Mystery

Format:
Audio Book

Publisher:
Dreamscape Media

Release Date:
January 2012

It’s Valentine’s Day in the small Maine town of Tinker’s Cove and the competition for being the best chocolate in town is becoming very bloodthirsty. Fern’s Famous Fudge has been an icon in Tinker’s Cove for years, but now in comes a new competitor, Chanticleer’s Chocolates, very fancy and expensive chocolates.

Reporter Lucy Stone is assigned to cover Chanticleer’s Chocolates with a newspaper article, but when she discovers that the manager of the new chocolate company is a flirt who appears to be interested in her husband and Lucy’s own daughter goes to work at the new chocolate store, she wonders what’s really going on at this new company. The situation becomes even more serious when the ex-husband of one of Fern’s chocolate makers is found dead.

Lucy’s article goes from being a fluff piece to an investigative news article. She’s hot on the trail of the killer, but she has to work fast before anyone else turns up dead. Her investigation takes a turn Lucy wasn’t prepared for and she finds her own life is on the line.

This is the first book in the series that I listened to on audio. I read the first couple of books and the rest of the series is in my TBR. I found I enjoyed listening to it very much. The narrator, Karen White, has the perfect voice to tell this story. Sometimes I can’t put the voice to the characters, but that wasn’t the case with Karen’s narrating. She was perfect for this cozy mystery.

I always loved this series and this book was no exception. Lucy’s children are grown up (I really need to go back and read the previous books to catch up with them. The last book I read they were very young children. LOL). The characters in Tinker’s Cove are all charming and they give readers the comfy feeling of going home and meeting old friends.

As for the story itself, it’s a quick, fast-paced plot with a few twists and turns thrown into the mix. It’s a cozy mystery series that all cozy fans will love. It was a delightful distraction during my commute to and from work.

Quitters, Inc.

Genre:
Thriller, Suspense

Format:
Audio

Publisher:
Phoenix Audio

Release Date:
January 2006

This is the synopsis from Fantastic Fiction:

Dick Morrison's life has become a nightmare of addictions, filling his days with overeating, overworking, and smoking way too much. When an old friend tells him about a surefire way to quit, he's more than willing to give it a shot. But what Dick doesn?t know is that Quitters, Inc. demands a high price from anyone who strays from their rigid rules?like a few volts of electricity for the nearest and dearest...or maybe a missing thumb? Forced to choose between his desperate need for cigarettes and the dire consequences of giving in to his addiction, Dick must decide just how important another drag really is.

My thoughts...

I listened to the audio and, although it is a short book, it really hits you hard and sticks with you long after the audio is finished. Stephen King always has that way about him where he makes the reader feel the horror that the characters are actually going through. It reminded me why I always enjoyed King's work so much. It's been awhile since I read his books but this one brings it all back to me and I want more!

I Remember Nothing: and Other Reflections by Nora Ephron

Genre:
Non-Fiction

Publisher:
Random House Audio

Format:
Audio

Release Date:
November, 2010

Synopsis from Fantastic Fiction...

Nora Ephron returns with her first book since the astounding success of I Feel Bad About My Neck, taking a cold, hard, hilarious look at the past, the present, and the future, bemoaning the vicissitudes of modern life, and recalling with her signature clarity and wisdom everything she hasn't (yet) forgotten.

Even as she's listing 'What I Won't Miss' and 'What I Will Miss' - making the final tally - Ephron reaches back to recount falling hard for a way of life ('Journalism: A Love Story' ) and breaking up even harder with the men in her life ('The D Word' ), a long- anticipated inheritance with entirely unanticipated results ('My Life as an Heiress' ), and the evolution, a decade after she wrote and directed You've Got Mail, of her relationship with her in-box ('The Six Stages of E- mail' ). All the while, she gives candid, charming voice to everything women who have reached a certain age have been thinking . . . but have rarely acknowledged.

Filled with insights and observations that instantly ring true - and could have come only from Nora Ephron - I Remember Nothing is a pure delight.

My thoughts...

Another fun book to listen to. I'm glad I listened to both her books on CDs. It's especially fun since the author narrates the books herself. I can easily identify with so many of her situations, even though she's older than me :) Overall, these are fun books to list to.

I feel Bad About My Neck by Nora Ephron

Genre:
Non-Fiction

Format:
Audio

Publisher:
Random House

Release Date:
April 2008

Synopsis from Fantastic Fiction:

With her disarming, intimate, completely accessible voice, and dry sense of humor, Nora Ephron shares with us her ups and downs in I Feel Bad About My Neck, a candid, hilarious look at women who are getting older and dealing with the tribulations of maintenance, menopause, empty nests, and life itself.

Ephron chronicles her life as an obsessed cook, passionate city dweller, and hapless parent. But mostly she speaks frankly and uproariously about life as a woman of a certain age. Utterly courageous, uproariously funny, and unexpectedly moving in its truth telling, I Feel Bad About My Neck is a scrumptious, irresistible treat of a book, full of truths, laugh out loud moments that will appeal to readers of all ages.

My thoughts…

I listened to the audio version on my way to and from work. It was a fun read. Some situations I really identified with…not so much about the neck. I never felt bad about my neck. I actually never thought about my neck. LOL It made for an entertaining listen and I need something entertaining when I go to work. I’m now listening to the second book.

Shakespeare's Landlord by Charlaine Harris

Genre:
Cozy Mystery

Publisher:
Wf Howes

Format:
Audio

Release Date:
December 2010

This is the synopsis from Fantastic Fiction:

Lily Bard is a loner. Fiercely protective of her independence, she concentrates on her karate skills and her work as the proprietor of a cleaning and errand-running service, and pays little attention to the town around her. When her landlord is murdered, though, she looks like the prime suspect. Uncovering the real killer may be the only way to prove her innocence, and Lily realizes that she must focus on the other residents of tiny Shakespeare. Her job gives her easy access to people's private lives, and she begins to snoop, finding plenty of skeleton-filled closets, and exposing herself to the unwanted attentions of a murderer.

My thoughts...

This is the first book in the Lily Bard series. I love Charlaine Harris' Sookie Stackhouse books so I had to try this one. Lily has her own cleaning service and lives in an apartment building with a quirky group of neighbors. It has all the ingredients I enjoy in my cozy mysteries - A strong heroine who feels compelled to stick her nose into a local murder mystery as she can't trust the police to do their job, a cast of characters that send her on one wild goose chase after another and an intricate mystery that can go in all different directions until the case is solved. Lily even has a few secrets in her own past that she's determined to keep hidden. What a great idea for an amateur sleuth to be the local cleaning woman. She gets to come and go into everyone's house without drawing too much suspicion so she can snoop.

I listened to this one on audio and plan to listen to the rest of them on audio. This made for fun listening on my way to work. I can't wait to hear all about Lily's next adventure.

My Horizontal Life: A Collection of One Night Stands by Chelsea Handler

Genre:
Non-Fiction, humor

Format:
Audio

Publisher:
Tantor Media

Release Date:
August, 2008

Synopsis from Amazon:

You've either done it or know someone who has: the one-night stand, the familiar outcome of a night spent at a bar, sometimes the sole payoff for your friend's irritating wedding, or the only relief from a disastrous vacation.   Often embarrassing and uncomfortable, occasionally outlandish, but most times just a necessary and irresistible evil, the one-night stand is a social rite as old as sex itself and as common as a bar stool.Enter Chelsea Handler.   Gorgeous, sharp, and anything but shy, Chelsea loves men and lots of them.   My Horizontal Life chronicles her romp through the different bedrooms of a variety of suitors, a no-holds-barred account of what can happen between a man and a sometimes very intoxicated, outgoing woman during one night of passion.   From her short fling with a Vegas stripper to her even shorter dalliance with a well-endowed little person, from her uncomfortable tryst with a cruise ship performer to her misguided rebound with a man who likes to play leather dress-up, Chelsea recalls the highs and lows of her one-night stands with hilarious honesty.   Encouraged by her motley collection of friends (aka: her partners in crime) but challenged by her family members (who at times find themselves a surprise part of the encounter), Chelsea hits bottom and bounces back, unafraid to share the gritty details.   My Horizontal Life is one guilty pleasure you won't be ashamed to talk about in the morning.

My thoughts:

This was a funny read. I nearly laughed out loud as I drove to work (this could be a dangerous thing). It was a nice diversion and a book that didn’t take itself too seriously. Not all the stories were funny to me, but most were. I loved how Chelsea says what’s on her mind. She’s sure not afraid to say how she feels. I would definitely listen to her other books. I probably wouldn’t want a steady diet of these type of books, as Chelsea’s lifestyle is foreign to me, but it was nice for a change of pace.
