The weeks really do go fast, don't they? It's not only Sunday already, but it's almost Fall. What happened to Summer? I'm already seeing Halloween decorations in the stores. Time is flying too fast!

As for reading, I'm still reading Murder Passes The Buck by Deb Baker. I would have finished it sooner but I haven't had all that much time. I should finish it today though. This was a fun mystery. I'm not sure what will be next on my list to read but I certainly have enough to choose from :)

I watched one movie last night Drillbit Taylor with Owen Wilson. Silly movie, but sometimes you just need silly.

I'm busy planning for my vacation which I go on in a week. We're going to Atlantic City, Ocean City and Cape May. Should be fun, but I'm doing alot of googling trying to come up with places to go in those areas. And, yes, I'm taking a stack of books. I don't know which ones yet, but probably books I have listed in my reading challenges.

Today I'm going to try and organize some of my books in bins and see if I can get a handle on my TBR (yeah, right!)

If you’re anything like me, one of your favorite reasons to read is for the story. Not for the character development and interaction. Not because of the descriptive, emotive powers of the writer. Not because of deep, literary meaning hidden beneath layers of metaphor. (Even though those are all good things.) No … it’s because you want to know what happens next?

Or, um, is it just me?


My Answer:

Yes, that would be my ultimate reason for reading a book - the story. Sure, I have some authors on auto-buy, but if there's a good story regardless of who wrote it, I'll read it. Some of my favorite authors didn't have stories I particularly liked and it wasn't enough to hold my interest. A particular author may get me to buy a book, but keeping me interested is all about a good, storyline.

Not too often. My brother lives out of state and we e-mail once in awhile.

Hate it...just ask politely and I'd probably do what you wanted :)

Nope

Never done it, but if someone wants to that's their business. Doesn't bother me.

Today's topic: LibraryThing authors. Who are your LibraryThing authors? What books of theirs do you have? Do you ever comment on an author's LT page? Have you received any comments from an author on your LT account?


My answer: Lisa Plumley is one of my friends on LT. I have many books of hers. I've read her books for many years - some romantic contemps, a few historical romances. Some other LT authors I like that I've found on there are Sherryl Woods, Lisa Unger and Susan Wittig Albert. I'm pretty new to LT, so I'm still checking things out.

As for comments, Lisa is the only one that has commented to me so far. She and I always run into each other on the different booksites.

This week's questions....

If you could take more control of one aspect of your life, what would it be?

I would manage time between being on the computer, TV, reading and my real life better. When I get into moods, something always suffers. There's just not enough time in the day.

If you were to name the difference between the male soul and the female soul, what would it be?

I can't think of anything that makes them different.

If you had to admit the most selfish thing you do on a regular basis, what would you say it is?

Probably try to watch TV when my husband is sleeping. He does it when I'm sleeping, but I can sleep right through it, which is odd because normally I'm the lighter sleeper.

Another Sunday has arrived and it's a lovely day outside. I finished reading Death by Pantyhose by Laura Levine this morning. I loved this book and I love this series. Laura Levine is so good at writing comedy and I was left feeling good after reading this one. It's always nice to find a book that genuinely lifts your spirits. I just started another cozy mystery for a book discussion. This one is Murder Passes The Buck by Deb Baker and already I'm enjoying it. Another humorous cozy mystery.

I also joined LibrayThing this week and I can't believe I didn't join sooner. I love it! I've been busy adding my books to it (although that's a never-ending process). So, if any of you see me there, please add me to your friends. I need friends!

Genre: Cozy Mystery

Freelance writer Jaine Austen is once again unemployed and having a real bad day. Her ancient Toyota Corolla is stolen, her father is wanted by the police for stealing an old Hawaiian shirt, a potential employer calls her a liar and the only job prospect on her arisen is arrested for murder by pantyhose. The only thing Jaine can do is investigate the murder and not lose out on a job offer.

Jaine has more obstacles thrown in her path then she would care to admit. It all starts with her cat Prozac, who is jealous of Jaine’s one and only date. Then there’s the man himself, Andrew, who seems interested in her but his perfect size two colleague is not one of Jaine’s biggest fans and does all she can to sabotage their relationship.

When Dorcas Mackenzie offers her a job as her comedy writer, Jaine figures she can do that until something better comes along. After all, Dorcas was only paying $5 a joke, not enough to keep Prozac happily fed. However, if Dorcas goes to jail, Jaine wouldn’t even get the five bucks.

Jaine begins her investigation and, much to her dismay, there is a very long list of suspects. Many wanted Vic murdered and she was convinced the real killer had to be someone other than Dorcas. They all had a much stronger motive. When Jaine’s life is threatened, she knows she’s on the right track but will she be able to bring the killer to justice before she winds up dead too?

Laura Levine is a brilliant comedy writer. She has many television sitcoms in her long list of credits. The Jaine Austen series is a real treat to read. Each character jumps right off the page and comes to life right before your eyes. This is a fast-paced story which had me laughing out loud throughout the entire book. I was so sad to see the story come to an end. This is her 6th book in the series and it hasn’t lost a beat. The next book is Killing Bridezilla and it’s unknown if this writer will be able to hold out for the paperback. I may have no choice but to get this is hardcover.

Whether you usually read off of your own book pile or from the library shelves NOW, chances are you started off with trips to the library. (There’s no way my parents could otherwise have kept up with my book habit when I was 10.) So … What is your earliest memory of a library? Who took you? Do you have you any funny/odd memories of the library?

My Answer: I really don't remember who first took me to the library, but I would have to guess it was my mother since my father worked nights and slept during the day. I also used the library at school alot. I don't really have any specific memories but I do remember falling in love with one specific book. I don't know the name, but it was about a fictional witch (I must have started liking paranormals way back when.) I remember trying to get the librarian to sell the book to me, but she wouldn't (probably knew I had no money-LOL).

Tuesday Thingers

Today's question: LT and RL (real life)- do you have friends in real life that you met through LibraryThing? Have you attended any LT meet-ups in your area? Would you be open to attending meet-ups or is LT strictly an online thing for you?

My answer: I don't belong to LT, but I'm starting to think I really need to. I've been hesitant since I have Goodreads and Shelfari, but I'm going to check it out when I get home from work.

So, I'll take a different approach to the question, I've met some online friends in RL. Not recently, but years ago. It was fun and I wasn't disappointed. I email so much that I consider my online friends to be RL friends. In fact, the ones I know in person don't have nearly as much in common with me as my online friends.

The Host by Stephenie Meyer

Genre: Paranormal


The earth has been taken over by beings from another world. These souls invade the human body, taking over their minds and leaving only their bodies intact.

Melanie Stryder is one of those humans, but she refuses to go down without a fight. As a new soul is placed into her body, Melanie continues to fight it off. She can’t let the soul win. Her entire family is at risk. She must find a way to return to her brother, Jamie, and the man she loves, Jared. Her fears mount as Melanie doesn’t know if she can trust the new soul in her body. Will it help her to save her loved ones or will it use her as a way of capturing them as well?

Melanie fills her new soul, named Wanderer, with visions of the love and happiness she feels for Jamie and Jared. It doesn’t take Wanderer long to adapt those feelings and have her own feelings of love for both of them, but she faces adversity at every step. The few humans that are still alive don’t trust her and would just as soon kill her as look at her, but can she convince Jamie and Jared that she’s not all bad?

Wanderer begins to fit in with some of the humans and is given the name Wanda. She finds a human of her own to love in Ian. The conflict increases with two women live in one body and love different men. Only one woman can survive and she can only have one man.

This is an interesting and intriguing story. Although the souls are the enemy, their reasons for invading earth aren’t completely evil. They do not believe in violence and feel humans possess those violent qualities. It is hard to argue with their quest for a happy, peaceful world, but seeing the humans torn apart from their families is devastating. Not all humans are violent.

It gives the reader much to think about. Nothing is completely black or white, there are always shades of grave throughout this book. It has a little bit of everything – romance, science fiction, paranormal, and adventure. I couldn’t put this book down.

Stephenie Meyer is a talented and creative author. I intend to read more of her books and am hopeful there will be a sequel to The Host. I’d love to re-visit these characters I grew to love.

Happy Sunday, Everyone!

This week I've still been reading "The Host" by Stephenie Meyer and really loving it. Now, I see why she has so many fans. I do have three of her books from her YA vampire series, which I will eventually read. I do have to say, "The Host" has made me not want to log onto the computer as much this week - which is a shocker for me! I've just wanted to read. I've begun to care about all these characters and want to see what happens to them. I guess that says alot right there.

I have no idea what I will read next. It will probably be a Harlequin/Silhouette or a cozy mystery. I need something short and light after this one :)

I was supposed to see The X-Files movie this week, but it's no longer in any of the movie theaters near here. I'm really surprised about that. It was only released in July and now a month later it's out of the theater? Oh well, I guess that means the DVD will be out soon.

I'm not really into the Olympics, so I haven't read any books about it. I do read books that have baseball in it. I read both non-fiction and fiction.

Do you consider yourself a sports fan?
Because, of course, if you’re a rabid fan and read about sports constantly, there’s a logic there; if you hate sports and never read anything sports-related, that, too … but you don’t have to love sports to enjoy a good sports story.
(Or a good sports movie, for that matter. Feel free to expand this into a discussion about “Friday Night Lights” or “The Natural” or whatever…)

I love baseball and I especially love the Yankees. So, I will usually read anything about them - both fiction and non-fiction. I love sports-related romances.

Light of the Moon by Luanne Rice

Genre: Women’s Fiction, Audio

Susannah Connolly is devastated when her mother passes away from a long illness. She is consumed with guilt that she wasn’t there in her mother’s last hours, but she was out of town on business at her mother’s insistence. Her mother’s dying wish is for Susannah to visit Southern France and Saint Sarah, the Romany gypsies’ patron saint. Saint Sarah helped Susannah’s mother have a child when there was no hope.

During her trip, Susannah meets Grey Dempsey, the owner of a local stable and ranch. She is immediately drawn to the man and falls in love, but his troubled teenage daughter, Sari, stands in their way. Five years prior, Sari’s mother, Maria, left her family to be with another man. Maria turned her back on Sari, who tried to stop her mother from leaving but instead suffered an accident in the process. The accident left Sari in a colorless world as she suffered from color blindness since that day. Sari never recovered from her mother’s abandonment and certainly didn’t want her father involved with another woman.

This was an audio book that I listened to on my way to and from work. I don’t usually listen to audio books, but I decided to give it a try. “Light of the Moon” was a touching story of daughters and their relationship with their mother, as well as two lonely people finding love together. The reader of this book was quite good and was soothing to listen to. The story was touching, although it did take me awhile to get into it. The characters were well-developed and I had a sense of the ones I enjoyed and the ones I didn’t like. I usually can depend on Luanne Rice for a good, emotional read and this one was in that same line.

1. Is there anything hanging from your vehicle's rear view mirror?

I think one of those air freshner things. It's old and probably doesn't even work anymore.

2. When you go into the bathroom, do you ever check behind the shower curtain? You know, to make sure no one is miraculously hiding back there.

LOL, no, but it's a good idea :)

3. At what age did your mom or dad give you "the talk" about sex?

I think I'm still waiting. LOL

4. If you could add anything at all to an airplane to make trips more interesting, what would it be and why?

More food! It gives me something to do and it seems like most airlines have stopped or given out less of it.

5. What is one thing you and your significant other can never seem to agree on?

Going grocery shopping. He hates it, but I figure it's a necessary evil.

6. Have you ever walked in on someone else having sex? How did you and the people involved react?

Nope.

7. Everyone hears discussions that they consider boring. What is one topic that can put you to sleep quicker than any other?

Probably the weather.

Today's question: Favorite bookstores. What's your favorite bookstore? Is it an online store or a bricks-and-mortar store? How often do you go book shopping? Is your favorite bookstore (or bookstores) listed as a favorite in LT? Do you attend events at local bookstores? Do you use LT to find events?

I'm lucky enough to work right across the street from Borders, Waldens and a brand new Barnes & Nobles. So, you can imagine where I spend my lunch hour everyday :) I alternate between them all. I mainly use Borders and Waldens so I can use my Borders card and the coupons they send me. B&N is amazing though. It has two floors and I can get lost in there for hours.

Sometimes I will go online and use Borders online or PSB or Bookmooch. It depends on what I'm looking for. I sometimes have a hard time of finding cozy mysteries in the bookstores here, so I get them online. It depends.

I don't belong to LT, so I don't use that at all.

How would your friend describe you to someone who has never seen you?

Short, thin, very curly brown hair and wears glasses. I think they'd also say I was quite shy, but once you get to know me, I'll talk up a storm. LOL

Do you trust anyone to protect you? Who, and why?

Yes, my husband. He's always watching out for me and I have all the trust in the world in him.

If you died or went missing, who would miss you?

This is a sad thought....my husband, my cats, my parents...I hope they would anyway.

The Sunday Salon

A whole week has already gone by. I swear, time is flying! Fall will be here soon. I started reading "The Host" by Stephenie Meyer this week. I must admit, the huge size of it was intimidating, but as I started to read it, I was hooked. It reminds me a bit of Star Trek with a lot of romance added. I have Meyer's YA vampire series in my TBR and eventually I will get to it, but if it's as good as "The Host", I know I won't be disappointed. I still have a long way to go in finishing "The Host", but it's a great adventure and a new-to-me author and I'm really having fun with this.

I, also, am listening to "Light of the Moon" by Luanne Rice on audio. I listen on my way to and from work. It's good, but it's kind of hard for me to get used to audio books. I still think I prefer the traditional paper books.

Yankee For Life By Bobby Murcer

Yankee for Life by Bobby Murcer

Genre: Biography

This book was written by Bobby Murcer shortly before he passed away. He takes us on his journey beginning with when he learned he had brain cancer and then taking us through his career as a New York Yankee. A team he always wanted to play for.

Murcer takes us through all of his high points, as well as the low points both personally and professionally. We experience his happy times and the disappointments he had along the way. I felt as if he was actually telling me the story in his own voice. There was humor to it, as well as some sadness. What a brave man he was and what a brave family supporting him.

The book is very well written and very poignant and sad, knowing that not long after the book was released, he passed away. For me, this was a fast-paced book and I finished in only a couple of days ( a record for me – I’m a slow reader).

If you are a Yankee fan, I recommend this book highly.

I'm having a good reading week for me. I finished Familiar Lullabye. A Harlequin Intrigue by Caroline Burnes, which also means I completed my Harlequin/Sihoutte reading challenge. I posted my review below. This is a cute romantic suspense series featuring a cat (Familiar) as an amateur sleuth. I know many don't like cats (or any animals) talking in books, but I love it. Besides, the cat can't talk to humans - we just get to hear everything he's thinking and doing. It's fun. There are many books in this series. There are 20 stories, so far, and I've read 15. 5 more to go!

Currently I'm reading Yankee for Life by Bobby Murcer. Bobby recently passed away from brain cancer and this is quite an emotional read for me. I'm a huge Yankee fan and he was one of my favorites when growing up. I have to get it back to the library, so I only have a couple of days to finish.



My next book will be my first Stephenie Meyer book, "The Host" and I'm looking forward to this one.

I'm also listening to an audio book by Luanne Rice "Light of the Moon". I never listen to audio books, but I decided to try one. I have an hour drive everyday, so I thought it might be fun to listen to a book. We'll see if I can concentrate on it though.

Homicide detective Mel Haskin strays away from his usual cases to figure this one out. This case is a particularly personal one to Mel and he isn’t about to allow the mother off the hook. He wants to find her and have her declared an unfit mother. He never expected Lily Markey, a top Washington DC reporter, to be involved. The question was, why a reporter leaving an abandon child on doorsteps?

Lily had her work cut out for her. She couldn’t let Mel find out who the parents of this child was or the child would never be safe. Neither would the baby’s mother. Lily vowed to do all she could to protect both of them.

This story had everything from romance to mystery, it will keep readers turning the pages until the very end. I actually found myself in happy tears at the end. I love re-visiting Familiar and following his adventures.

I read this one as part of my Harlequin/Silhouette reading challenge, plus I’ve read all the previous books in this delightful series.
