The Lane women are bibliomancers, but Cassie sees her divination not as a gift, but as a curse--one from which she desperately wants to escape. It turns out, though, that running from her fate isn’t as easy as she thought it would be. When a woman goes missing, and a neighbor turns up dead, Cassie turns to the books she’s always avoided to help her find the truth.

My Review

Cassandra and Lacy Lane grew up on Cape Misery which is on the outskirts of Laurel Point. They are bibliomancers living under a family curse. The men die at sea while the women die at childbirth. Their parents died many years ago and they’ve been raised by their Aunt Rose.

At only twenty years old, Cassie has had enough of Cape Misery and the curse. She wants to get as far away as she can so she moves to Devil’s Cove in North Carolina leaving her seventeen year old sister behind with their aunt. The sisters vow to never have children and never fall in love.

Cassie's knowledge of flowers gets her a job at Bloom’s, the local nursery. Cassie is very happy with her life until a local woman goes missing and her neighbor is murdered. Cassie has always turned her back on books, but she needs them now to solve this mystery.

This is a novella and a quick read. It’s the first book of a “book mini” series, but also a prequel to “A Book Magic” mystery series. I have only read this novella but I’m quite intrigued with the premise of turning to books for the answers.

Names such as “Devil’s Cove” and “Cape Misery” gave me a real feel for the atmosphere. The author brings the story to life with her character development and vivid setting. I could feel Cassie’s pain dealing with her family curse. I was totally transported into her world.

I will have to check out the other series and read that one too. I’m looking forward to reading more by this author.
