Jordan McAllister’s dreams of being a sports news reporter hits a snag when her fiancĂ© leaves her for another woman. She has no choice but to leave Dallas and move to the small town of Ranchero, Texas where she moves into an apartment building with a zany group of neighbors. She accepts a job writing personal ads for the local newspaper. When one of her co-workers has an injury and is unable to work, Jordan is temporarily assigned to her food critic column. Jordan knows nothing about fine cuisine but she knows better than to turn her back on this career opportunity.

Her first assignment is at a local steak house. The big problem is that Jordan doesn’t eat steak. She prays there is something else on the menu she can order and is delighted when a waiter recommends foie gras. She has no clue what that is, but as long as it’s not beef, she’s happy. Then she learns her meal is duck and she’s disgusted. Jordan can’t bring herself to eat it, instead she pours the entire dish in the purse she borrowed from a friend. Not only is the purse ruined, but her waiter winds up dead near her apartment. She’s even more horrified when the police accuse her of the murder.

As Jordan tries to prove her innocence, she gets deeper and deeper into trouble. When she’s kidnapped, her neighbors rally around to save her. Jordan can’t figure out what this murder has to do with her, but she meets a handsome stranger who is more than happy to lend a helping hand as well.

Liz Lipperman creates a brilliant cast of characters in this first book of her “A Clueless Cook Mystery” series. Each character is quirky and cleverly crafted with their own individual personalities which shine through each page. They will make you laugh and even shed a few tears. The storyline is complex, which is exactly how I like my mysteries. Just when you think you have it all figured out, she tosses in a few curve balls. There are even a few yummy recipes included. This series promises to be a fun one and it’s off to a great start! I absolutely adored this book and have my calendar marked for the next book in the series.

This, of course, gets 5 kitties and my Socrates' Great Book Alert!
