Today's Question...
When reading do you read every word? Do you ever skip chapters or skim over parts? (question curtesy of Wendy)
My Answer...I have to admit, there are times when I do skim. I don't skip whole chapters, but sometimes if there's too much narration or description, I'll skim through. Also, if it's a boring book and I just want to get to the end, I'll skim. I know I should probably stop reading a book if I find it that boring, but for some reason, I just can't. Probably has something to do with spending the money for a book, so I figure I should read the entire thing even if it's awful. In any case, back to the question...yep, I do skim. It's not often that I do that, but it does happen.
What do you do?
I'm the same way. I feel like I should save time and just stop reading a boring book but I can't bring myself to give up.

ReplyDeleteI'm a naturally fast reader, but, yes, I skim, too. I skim through description of scenery when it starts to become too much, and, at times, when the main character is in too much jeopardy in a mystery, I'll skim through that chapter. And, then, at times, I read every word because the writing is so wonderful.

ReplyDeleteI too find it almost impossible to stop reading a book it it's bad, even if it's a library book. One exception is that if I feel the urge to throw the book across the room more than four times, then it's time to give it up!
ReplyDeleteIf I'm not enjoying a book, I may skim, but only because I don't like to abandon a book. If it helps me get thru a bad book, I will, but I don't like to.

ReplyDeleteI have a hard time not finishing a book that I've bought, which is probably why I get most of my books from the library - that way I don't have to worry about it!

ReplyDeleteThose books with long drawn out detail and explanation are just asking to be skimmed. I've never really cared if the protagonist is wearing a silky dress the color of the finest Cabernet with a polka dot, ruched bodice and a ruffle that falls just below her well toned calf while carrying a bejeweled sparkling bag the shade of the evening. The author can say, "she wore a red dress," and I'd be just fine!

bookfool - Yep, clothing and scenery. I really don't need indepth descriptions.
My first instinct was to say that I read every word, but then I realized that isn't quite true. Didn't I skim a little yesterday while reading The Woman in White, after all? I do skim on occasion, usually only a paragraph that is overly descriptive and doesn't do anything for the story.
