Armchair BEA: Day 2 - More Than Words

http://www.armchairbea.com/

It's day 2 of Armchair BEA and today's topic is More Than Words...

There are so many mediums that feature more than just words and enhance a story in a multitude of ways. Examples may include graphic novels and comics, audiobooks, or even multimedia novels. On this day, we will be talking about those books and formats that move beyond just the words and use other ways to experience a story. Which books stand out to you in these different formats?

My response...

I love reading about celebrity gossip, but I don't particularly like actually reading their books.  I find myself skimming through them.  So, I tried listening to them on audio and what a difference!  Most times the narration is read by the author.  It makes it even more enjoyable and, sometimes, funny.  My all time favorite is Tina Fey's Bossypants.  What a fun book!  I read it back in 2011 and you can read my review here.  Listening to Tina tell her own stories just can't be beat.  Reading the words just doesn't hold the same value.

Other honorable mentions that I enjoyed...

It also helps that these are all comedians and their books sound like I'm attending one of their shows.  It's fun.  The other genre I listen to on occasion is chick lit, but those I do prefer actually reading.

Overall, I prefer the written word but audios do have a place in my reading.

  3. Interesting about the comedy aspect. Perhaps that will help. LOL Can't seem to get through audio books.

  4. Whoa! Nice tip on the audios--I too really like reading about the celebs in magazines, watching the entertainment shows but not so much on their books. I will be trying out the audios of some of them for sure. Thanks!

  5. I love audio books, but haven't listened to any celebrity books that way. I have most of those you mentioned on my want-to-read list, and audio would be a great way to go! Thanks for the tip. :)

  6. Huh, I've never even considered celebrity books. For me, it takes a special person to be an author, so I always feel impressed when a random celebrity comes out with a novel. It takes time and effort and dedication.. maybe it gets easier when you're just talking about yourself, though.
Maybe I should try one in audio. Normally I have a hard time listening to audiobooks, but I think it would be easier to pay attention to it if it was in Betty White's voice.

  8. I think anything Tina Fey does is amazing! Although I don't read biographies, I do find them really interesting to leaf through! Comedians do make for great authors some times because they have a surprising deep side! Great answer, hopefully I'll see you around again soon!

  9. It really gives a different perspective to the celebrity bios when the author narrates an audio book. It kind of makes you feel as if you are having a conversation and not reading a bio.

  10. I have Ellen and Tina's books on my kindle. I read Betty's and enjoyed it but it wasn't as funny as I hoped. It was just stories about her and her life. It was still good but lacked the funny for me.

  11. Audio books don't work for me unless I'm driving a long ways and can listen for long stretches.

I used to enjoy graphic novels and still pick one up now and then.
