Book Blurb

In the first book of a delightful new series from Lauren Layne, the star columnist of Stiletto magazine will do anything for a story. Anything . . . except fall in love.

Julie Greene loves flings. Loves steamy first dates, sizzling first kisses, and every now and then, that first sexy romp between the sheets. Comfy pants, sleepy Sundays, movie nights on the couch? Shudder. But when Julie gets assigned the hardest story of her career—a first-person account of that magical shift between dating and “I do”—she’ll need a man brave enough to give a total commitment-phobe a chance at more.

Normally, Mitchell Forbes would be exactly that man. A devastatingly hot workaholic who tends to stay in relationships for far too long, he should be the perfect subject for Julie’s “research.” But what Julie doesn’t know is that Mitchell is looking to cut loose for once in his life. And the leggy journalist notorious for avoiding love is exactly the type of no-strings fling he’s looking for. In other words, Mitchell is the polar opposite of what Julie needs right now. And, at the same time, he’s exactly what she wants.

When Work Meets Place: Office Romance in a Modern World

You know how some people are just crazy about old movies? And then they go on those rampages about how they “just don’t make ‘em like that anymore?”

I am not one of those people.

It pains me to say this, but perhaps I’ve gotten too accustomed to the glitz of modern day blockbusters, because I tend to find the “old ones” a little slow for my liking.

There is very one notable exception: Desk Set.

I’m not sure how (or why) I stumbled upon this movie a few years ago, but I was mesmerized. Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn have that kind of chemistry that can make you forget all manner of plot holes and goofy set pieces.

But Desk Set is more than just witty banter and masterful actors. It’s also a darn good example of a workplace romance.

Workplace romance is hardly a new concept. It’s a fantastic trope to work with. That “forbidden” element provides not only rock-solid conflict but also perfect fodder for sexual tension. The classic example? Boss/secretary romances. I’m not embarrassed to admit that this is one of my favorites, and one I played around with in a modern way in Only With You (available March 2013).

But there are so many other fresh ways in which a couple can meet through the workplace. In Desk Set, it’s Spencer Tracy’s character trying to “computerize” the research department where Katherine Hepburn works. Pam and Jim from The Office. Or what about Julie James’ Just the Sexiest Man Alive in which a Hollywood hotshot follows around the lawyer heroine as research for his next role? In my Stiletto series, all my heroines write about relationships, only to find a little romance of their own while working on a story.

Workplace romances are everywhere.

And why not? In a society where we spend at least eight hours a day “on the job,” it’s not a stretch to imagine crossing paths with The One, right?

So let’s talk office romance. TV? Movies? Books? Which are your favorite . . . let me have ‘em. The more forbidden the better!
