Sunday Salon - De-Stressing with Chick Lit!

This was certainly a sad week from start to finish...we began the week losing Ed McMahon and ended it with losing Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson. Three Hollywood icons. Of course Michael Jackson's being the most shocking and unexpected. Very sad indeed.

As for me and reading this week...I finished "Made in the USA" by Billie Letts and, as I wrote in my review, I loved it. I have to look over this author's backlist as she's one I never read before. Then I read a non-fiction book "A Worthy Legacy" by Tomi Akinyanmi. This is a very touching, sweet story. I'm going to be hosting a blog tour on July 14th and will post my review then.

Now, I'm listening to the audio version of "Summer Blowout" by Claire Cook. This is a funny chick lit book. As for a print book, I'm reading "Holly's Inbox" by Holly Denham. The funny thing is, I was looking at this book in Barnes & Noble earlier this week and it really looked good, but it's a huge book. I had never heard of the author before, so I wasn't sure about it. Then just a day or two later, I heard from the author asking if I'd like to review the book. I couldn't resist. I've started it already and it's wonderful. It's written in email format so it really goes fast. When I'm done, I'll post my review. Hopefully it will continue to be good. These two books are funny and make me laugh - something I can really use since the past few weeks have been difficult at work and it looks like next week will be too. After that, maybe things will calm down a bit. For now, these chick lit books are great stress relievers :) I love chick lit :)

Do any of you have a particular genre you turn to when "real" life gets you down?

I'm running two book giveaways through July 24th. One is for the audio version of Swimsuit by James Patterson and the other is for Off Season by Anne Rivers Siddon. Both look great. If you'd like to win one or both of these, just click the covers in the sidebars.

I hope everyone has a great week!

  1. I agree, with all the passings it was a sad week indeed. When life gets me down I turn to a good romance/chick lit. Something feel-good.

I read and arc of Summer Blowout last year and thought it was cute. Lucky you getting Holly's Inbox. I'm hoping to get hold of it at some point. I've only seen great reviews!

  2. I have not read any chick lit for a long time now. And when I stressed out I read children's books or graphic novels.

  3. Mary - Holly's Inbox is really good!

Gautami tripathy - I have to try a graphic novel. I've heard so many good things about them, but still haven't tried one.

  4. It was a sad week, wasn't it? So much death. A coworker's 21 year old daughter died tragically the same day as Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson. Her death, of course, didn't get any media attention, but it was all the more painful being so close to home.

I've heard great things about Billie Letts and have been wanting to read one of her books.

I don't think there is one genre I turn to when "real" life gets me down. I think it depends on what it is that is getting me down.

I hope you have a great week, Yvonne!

  8. I definitely turn to chick lit when I am feeling overwhelmed by life. I want to be able to get lost in an easy read that is usually quick.

  9. Literary Feline- 21 is just so young, how heart-breaking.

Paranormal romances are always a pick me up for me. It's just so easy to get lost in them.
