From the first paragraph...

Gabbie stepped out of her car and regarded the place she was to call home for the rest of the school year. In the gloom of every nightfall, the weatherbeaten cottage held as much charm as the House of Usher.

    Hi Yvonne,

    Great opening and teaser lines, definitely would make me want to read on. I need to know if this person is a pupil or teacher when she mentions the school year.
