Mr. Darcy Broke My Heart by Beth Pattillo

Genre: Romance, Chick Lit

Claire Prescott is not much of a Jane Austen fan, but when her sister is unable to attend a Jane Austen seminar in Oxford, England, she agrees to take her place. Claire meets a wonderful older woman who claims to possess the first draft Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Claire agrees to read the manuscript but doubts the validity of it. What would Jane Austen’s first draft be doing hidden away in this woman’s little cottage?

As Claire delves into the manuscript, she begins to realize that not only is it legitimate but the heroine from Pride and Prejudice was originally meant to be with someone other than Mr. Darcy. The book makes Claire think about her own life and her own relationships. Back home, she has Neil – a nice guy, but tends to take her for granted. At the seminar she meets James – tall, dark and handsome.

When Neil makes an unplanned trip to England, Claire’s thoughts take off in different directions. She’s unsure which man she wants and unsure what direction her life is going.

Unbelievably I haven’t read any of Jane Austen’s books, but after reading this, I intend to. Humor, sweetness, and romance are sprinkled throughout this fast-paced book about a modern day woman facing the same relationship problems that women faced for many centuries.

Beth Pattillo has a fresh approach to Jane Austen’s writing and her words flow beautifully throughout each page. Definitely an author I’m going to watch for in the future as well as look for her backlist.

Another book that gets a Socrates Great Book Alert and 5 kitties!
