Synopsis from Goodreads:

Heather Hampton, a middle-aged, freshly divorced fashion journalist from Long Island, arrives in Dolphin Cove, New Zealand to start a new life as a beach café owner and a cocktail maker extraordinaire, not to battle a grumpy live-in chef-cum-baker, rescue feral kittens and find bodies and skeletons in cupboards. But when she is accused of poisoning her chef, she has no choice, but to get involved and find out what really happened.

With the help, and sometimes against, a semi-retired police officer and a rescue kitten, Heather discovers a few secrets, makes a couple of friends and almost ends up on a date.

But, more importantly, will she guess who the murderer is? Can you beat her to it?

My Review

A divorced journalist, Heather Hampton, leaves her life from Long Island, New York behind and heads to New Zealand and the small town of Dolphin Cove. She buys a beach cafe and focuses on creating cocktails and making her new cafe a success. She inherits a live-in baker who doesn’t seem thrilled to have Heather around and doesn’t like her new ideas for the cafe.

After drinking one of Heather’s cocktails, the baker gets deathly ill. The police discover she was poisoned and, of course, Heather is their number one suspect.

It’s up to Heather to find out who the real culprit is. As she investigates, she finds out many of the islands secrets as well as a cute kitten.

This is the first book in the Career Crisis Cafe mystery series and it’s off to a great start. It’s a short quick read. The author did a nice job of creating the characters and setting to give the reader a good feel for this series.

The plot moved along at a fast pace. There weren’t many suspects, but there were a few and they kept me guessing until near the end. It was wrapped up nicely and I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.
